I'm not going all boot camp discipline on this one, not as of yet anyway. I'm going to let him be a puppy for now and just stay on the basics. He's not overly invasive, not too boisterous and not a big breed. He can't do much damage. My last two dogs I leaned on from very early ages. It paid off, but it took a bit of work that I just don't feel is necessary right now. This guy I'm going let be a bit "free range." He knows for the most part if he's screwing up so at any given point over the next 3 or 4 months I can clamp down and start molding him.

My only real gripe right now is that he's really vocal for a Heeler. ACD's are bred to be on the quiet side as to not disturb the herds and so when they do sound off, the ranchers know something is legitimately up, like predators or unknown persons. They're bred to be not just watch dogs, but very effective, precise watch dogs.

This guy barks almost as much as any given more vocal breed. Not as bad as say a Malamut, but he's headed in that direction. I'm hoping age will calm him a bit. My last Heeler only really barked when she was really excited, wanted to play and you ignored her, or when she heard Coyotes. That's about it. My Chocolate was a consumnate watch dog. He barked when he meant it.

Owen also has a legit ear-piercing bark. It literally causes ear discomfort.

I agree the training process should be done over time and as they mature. The first step is to teach them not to be boisterous when they are puppies as this can put people off a dog first time meeting it.

Maybe rename him Plasticine.

Controversial!!!--
my vet, when Twinks was a puppy, suggested a firm tap on nose was the way. Sometimes the thought of a treat mightn't be enough. Worked. She used to run eleven miles a day next to my bicycle every day, tucked in to the nearside.

Being the countryside, where people can't mind their own business, nothing much going on I suppose, I was reported to animal welfare (RSPCA) for overexercising her. Told the inspector old ladies don't leave money to them in their wills for this waste of resources, and what about all the fat labs taken for a tiny walk around the block once a day.

Maybe he should have looked over the hedgerow at the state of some of the cows.

Passive Aggression is the only way to deal with panty-waste neighbors like that. I would drive those losers absolutely out of their minds.
Inspector wouldn't tell me who the grass was. Which meant I was forever wondering who it was, unfair, as it meant everyone was under suspicion.

This is Sable doing what she is good at;

I did not even have to be that firm with the tap as they react to this very well
I might have embellished the vet's advice! Not sure he did include 'firm' in the sentence...

everyone would be subject to my passive campaign of antagonization.
I think I did. Being the countryside, an outsider, it would have been everyone.

Actually, my children were ostracized in the village and the school (another village) because of differences. Not ostracized by children, the parents. So I was totally outgunned on the passive-aggressive front.
Sic Semper Tyrannis
Nice! Amazing what one learns on a motorcycle forum.
