Sorted ! :y45:

Here's a question. With all things measuring and being equal, including compressions, why does the LH float need to be lower than the others to achieve a similar mixture?

Glad you got it sorted. I can't answer the why. I just chalk it up to differences in the carbs and cylinders. On my 03 T100, once cylinder runs a tad warmer than the other.

Float level differences between carbs are relatively the same as the low speed mixture screws - they are ALMOST NEVER exactly the same between any two carbs. Each should be adjusted as an individual system, then carefully synchronised together as a matched group. This is sometimes a tedious process, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Thanks for that GP, my mind rests easy as you have confirmed my suspicions. This carburettor tuning business seems to be more of an art than clear cut science and logic. If it all measures the same on the bench statically, it doesn't mean it is the same with the engine running dynamically.

Very satisfying stuff playing with motorcycles. I had a grin from ear to ear when I pulled those spark plugs out yesterday and found that the problem was fixed. Now back to the other satisfying stuff.....enjoying the ride. WHOO

Wow what a find! I am sure I will not be able to get mine looking that good but am hoping once I have her up and running she will at least be a head turner. I really need to give mine a name but we are not well enough acquainted yet. Most likely after we get her running again.

Good luck with your project. Your T160 is already a head turner. Riding it will be the icing on the cake.

Hi SD

Sorry I've been a bit MIA of late, my enforced sabbatical (retrenched) has not turned in to relaxed hours of riding and tinkering but a slog of odd jobs around the house that i never had time to do before.

Surprised to see you've got the new love of your life in apart already:y15: hope your not neglecting "Boris" too much!

Thoroughly enjoyed reading through your (into the detail) high quality posts, it feels like I'm there with you:y2:

I've still got the suspension work to on the TSS and providing i don't get a job in the next week or 2 I might actually get it done...

Cheers for now.

Mike

Hey Mike,

Great to hear from you. MIA is what is happening to me at the moment.....fitting new joists and decking to the veranda's of my in laws Queenslander home, working hard as we are loosing marine pilots to the mining boom in the west and squeezing in family time leaves very little to play motorcycles.

TSS is running better than ever. Lowered the carb needles to the leanest position which has smoothed out the transition from 3500 rpm to 4000 rpm. It's running beautifully. Love the grunt of the twin.

Weather warming up in Mackay, 31 degrees today, so a little hesitant to take the old bikes out in the heat of the day....air cooled engines stuck at traffic lights is not a good combination.

T160 running really well since lowering the float levels to 2mm below top of float bowl, however still a little more work to do on the LH carb. Still running slightly rich. Clutch has now bedded in and working as it should. A real menace to do an oil change on. Gauze strainer in oil tank and sump (remove exhaust) to clean, cartridge filter to replace (and pre soak new one in oil and fill its chamber with oil) primary case oil, and bleed old oil from cooler by removing the oil return to the tank on initial start until clean oil pumps through and pre fill sump via plug at front of crankcase. Pleased I'm not paying a labour charge of $100 per hour to have it done.

Must be time to get one of those bikes out of your garage and enjoy a good ride....reward for all your hard work around the house.

TSS coming out of the shed tomorrow for a quick spin to a mates place to watch the Moto GP at Philip Is on TV. Tragic...couldn't make the pilgrimage south to watch Casey Stoner blitz the field. SAD

Currently I'm missing in action. My 18 year old son is setting up a music teaching business and I'm flat out fitting out his studio. On the up side, I get to hear his band practice which is awesome.

Talking about music, received a set of Viking replica mufflers for the T160 the other day. Beautiful craftsmanship and the music of the triple is terrific.

I'll stick with that, as my singing has every dog in the neighborhood howling, cat running for cover and small children crying. Worse than practicing the bagpipes!

LoL, I'm working solo at night in my boys petshop at the mo, and my singing is so bad all the kittens and puppies start crying and howling. So I've gone back to listening to a radio while I work which is taking a bit of getting used to because radios have been banned on most construction sites for the last ten to twenty years.

Gee sus Harry. Hope your singing doesn't make the frogs croak. :y2:

Pictures of the new Viking mufflers. These are made in New Zealand.

These quality replicas sound great

Baffle.JPG

Baffle with half of the fibre glass matting. Supplied with full matting covering the baffle and although a nice sound, a little too muted. Then tried with no matting and a little too loud for comfortable cruising at 100 kph. Sounds spot on with half the baffle covered. :y2:
