Well let us hope that the big twins are not all going to turn out problematic all round then as this will really hit the new rang hard if it is so.
I purchased a second hand 2014 LT with 10,000 kms on the clock just over a year ago. Went in to dealership 400kms away (closest) at 21,000 kms to have the sleeves and Pistons replaced due to the infamous clacking. This issue, known to many as piston slap, is happening to many of the LT and Commanders. Seems there is a faulty batch of sleeves used and it is random, some from new, some after a while. Mine is now at 42,000 kms and it came back and is now back in the dealership, out of warranty with instructions from Triumph Australia to strip it down and measure the sleeves. Although I have waited a while to get it back to them due to the distance, and it has slip on pipes, a pcv fitted and dynotuned they are saying that may have voided the warranty. Slip ons and a pcv have nothing to do with the faulty sleeves and the clacking noise. I am preparing for some hard ball from Peter Stevens (the Australian importer). Have also had chrome come off the gear selector, a front wheel bearing collapse at 16,000 kms and the bags replaced when they fell apart.

So to cap it all off. Triumph know about this issue, they are keeping quiet about it but the LT and Commander are getting a known reputation for having the clacking engine, hence our trade-in values will plummet. It is not good enough the lack of response to the owners of these bikes that are fantastic to ride, the best I have ever owned.

I
I have been lucky with my Storm, so far as I have nearly 85,000 on the clock and havent had any mechanical issues.
Though many owners do mention various "unusual' noises.
In my case, I thought the top end was a bit rattly in the early time, so changed the oil to Fuchs Silkolene semi 10/40 and has been great since.
Its great though, that Triumph acknowledge and rectify any issues that have arisen for some owners.
It is mainly the LT and Commander.

Bought a "Brand new" 14 model with 6 miles on it a little over a year ago, the noise began almost instantly within 500 miles I told a dealer about it at 500 miles he said wait until I bring it in for the 12 mile ck up and they will adjust the valves on Triumphs dime......ok so I ride some more the noise gets worse I like any other individual begin searching for trouble online I find a wealth of info ,,,, I find that folks are getting pistons and sleeves replaced due to sleeve movement in the block check ,,,,,, off to a reputable flagship dealer I go find out they have done multiple bikes with success so I get mine done...get it back ride it break it in and at 600 miles? the noise is back!!!! maddened I bring it back to dealer....they examine Triumph feeds a line of :shit: or so I think, and informs them to just change out the decompression Valve at the end of the cam on right side ,OK go ahead swap it ...they do and.....? STILL noisy....so...yes they tear down engine again, and replace sleeves and pistons and decompression cam deliver the bike to my home 200 miles in .....its back...Now I have done extensive research on this problem there are clearly 2 noises sometimes they are together sometimes they are separate ....This is COMPLETELY related to the exhaust decompression cam gear on right side of engine at top on end of shaft it will make itself known when "Coasting" or letting out of throttle and leaving a slight pressure on throttle also noted at certain RPM I have no tach so all I can say is right now 60 mph and above is where it is the most noticeable this is 3rd repair in 7000 miles I'm unsure of my next move....this HAS damaged resale value on these bikes along with rumors of them being dropped altogether even with all accessories and only 7000 miles its only worth 8-9 grand!!! what a load of crap so my angle is going to be how to shut that cam up......im not willing to take a bath on the Bike...so ill have to fix it I'm 1 1/2 years into warranty and I'm sure sooner than later Triumph will want out its costing them $$$$ and Myself Time,,,,,,,,,,,Triumph is aware of this as I have spent 0 dollars in 3 repairs

I must admit to being confused by what seems to be a trail of unreliable triumph models in the states, as I've heard very few complaints coming from European countries .
And I'm wondering weather climate is playing a role with some of the very hot temps you have over there !

well I am in central Florida and it does get Hella Hot , have considered switching to straight amsoil 60 weight synthetic motorcycle oil to see if it is of any help , the piston noises are gone now just that damn decompression valve set-up

Please keep us posted. I have a 2014 triumph thunderbird LT with 12000 on it. Getting ready to ride to Sturgis 4500 mile trip. Would really be passed if this happens to my bike. Maybe bmw not out of the question.

Ride it! Won't hurt anything. Just may or not be a "clacker". I have one with 20K kms on it and just did the 20K kms(12K mile) service and am heading out on a long trip tomorrow. Mine has no noises that I can hear.

Bought 2014 LT used 2,500 miles now 8,000. Klacking noise is unbelievable. Since warranty expired 11/2016 I'm told Triumph won't touch it. Spoke to a dealer who has indeed replaced sleeves, pistons, and decompression exhaust cam on these bikes. Then it was suggested by another dealer that there was excessive carbon build up on the piston heads causing the noise. (I use Lucas/Techron fuel system cleaner every other tank) Bottom line...I'm out 12K on a bike I cant resell/trade in. Since I'm retired affording another bike is out of the question. Thanks Triumph!

Pretty crappy on Triumphs part. To put out defective product and not fix is criminal.

From all I've read here and other forums, videos of the klacking noise, dealer conversations etc. Triumph is aware of the problem and swept it under a carpet. My last attempt will be to take it to yet another dealer and have them drive it.....with all the documentation printed out and links to the sound videos.

well guys i heard from service manager from shop, that triumph plans stopping production on LT. maybe all big motors. 3 year run, to many problems. they didn't do it right. Well see!

Heard similar from a sales guy.
Fella my age is the service manager at a dealership. As I mentioned somewhere he thinks the noise is carbon build up and he has over 50k on his 1600. Top end was opened on his bike to see excessive carbon on the piston heads. So I bit the bullet and did 2 Sea Foam treatments spraying direct into the throttle bodies and put a half can in the tank. Must admit there is quite a difference... less noise but still there. Anxious to see results from running out a full tank. Thinking full synthetic is too slippery, may change it out to Rotella t4/the new 15w-40 T5 semi
