Today’s Owen’s 1st birthday. He got a big ol’ cookie this morning(he was a little groggy and confused), a toy and a rawhide rope today, and he’s getting a big, free-range steak for dinner.

We wound up pan-grilling him a pound of organic/free-range ground beef. “Mince” to all you non-Yanks. FWIW, regular meat tends to have added hormones that are very bad for pets. A little scrap here and there is no problem, but if you’re treating your dog or cat to a slab of meat, go organic. So we mixed in a little kibble in with some gravy and he gobbled it right down.

Then he farted… all night long. So bad it woke me up a good few times.

Spikey got his nuts snipped today. He’s been stumbling around the place all doped up for the last couple hours, post op. Poor guy had to go like a full day without a meal.

I got to say the clinic that provides this service does some really good work. That’s all they do, and they do it cheap. They only need anywhere from a month to 3 months lead time depending upon bookings.

What food do you feed your cats?

For years now I have been feeding mine this.

However this is imported and the price has now just become stupid.

So today after doing a lot of searching and reading online I am now trying this.

I just got a small bag to see if the cats will like it and so far they love it.

For most of my life I’ve had one of the herding breeds, plus a few hunting and working breeds. The first dog that was “mine” and I say that lightly because the Doberman was given to me when I was 6 days old by my parents landlord. I have pictures somewhere of her but I have to idea what happened to her. The second dog was my father’s pup a Catahoula Cur, now called a Louisiana Leopard Dog or a Catahoula Leopard that he had before he left for Boot Camp. Me and that dog had some great adventures until I was about 10 and she was either 14 or 15 and had to be put down due to possible rabies.

Fast forward through 4 German Shepherds, one of which hated kids when my father brought him home. The female GSD I raised and actually bottle feed for a couple weeks until her mom could recover from an injury, convinced the male that he didn’t want to even look cross eyed at me and my brother if he wanted to live. After her little “talking” to him he was a changed dog.

A couple more Catahoulas, a Golden Retriever, and a GSD/ACD mix, and a Rottie that gave her life protecting my wife’s grandfather’s home I got my first full blood ACD, Queensland Heeler, Cattle Dog, Blue Heeler, or whatever else you want to call the breed. Sydney was the closest dog I’ve had to the female GSD. Awesome, hardheaded, super active, knothead but I miss her the most of all my dogs. A brain tumor took her from us at 11 years old. She was always between my wife and/or sons and any perceived danger/threat.

About 6 months old

And why she was also called Demon Dog

Fast forward to a few months before the tumor really hit her hard.

I was going to add Glaurung to the post above but hit enter accidentally before I could add him. I guess it was 8 years ago that I drove with my oldest son to my old stomping grounds in Louisiana to pick up his 16 week old Cardigan Welsh Corgi. I was questioning him on his choice but once we arrived at the breeders home I understood why he wanted a Corgi, a Cardigan especially.

Well fast forward three years, Harvey has established himself as my first grandson and the breeder called me to see if I wanted one of Harvey’s brothers. The pup from the litter that she kept as a show dog was going to be removed from the show circuit, he didn’t like doing it even though he was one major away from champion was offered to me. I couldn’t turn down the chance so I told her I would come get him. My wife wasn’t thrilled but said if I wanted him then I should go get him. I’m gonna say that before we made it 10 miles down the road they had already bonded and I no longer had MY dog. It was at least 6, maybe 8 weeks before he really accepted me as being really safe to be around. He had been raised by the breeder and her daughter along with the woman that also handled him for some of the shows. I was the first male to really spend any time with him.

So this is Glaurung the Golden.

And he claims my bed as his.

And the one that started it all, Harvey Dent

And Glaurung again.

Stumbled across these shots of Owen as a pup. This was maybe 6-8 months ago. He grew so fast. It’s almost like we got ripped off of his puppy time. He went from an 8lb munchkin to a 50lb maniac in the blink of an eye.

They get so precious few years with us. Make the most of them.
