If you think about it, the NX (October) bike could actually be called a 1979 model, if you follow the September = new model year theory.

The bike actually feels more stable with the shocks on the way I have them now.

Who knows if these are the originals or not too???

Likewise. I'm afraid that is one of Meridan's many mysteries.
 
The Girlings were the old "standards" with the hydraulics valved for use at the bottom, with the rod on top.

Koni came out with a new design that needed to be mounted "upside-down" for whatever reason. I suppose some engineers get an idea in thier head, and that's that. I think those were 79 only, or maybe 79/80. Then came the piggybacks with remote reservoir.
 
Looking at the frame(s), I see absolutely no difference between the two serial numbered frames. I think it had more to do with a redesigned chainguard (no longer curved) which would rub against the spring if you put the shocks on the normal way.
 
Hi Listers , I vaguely remember a tech article way back then that claimed that the Koni shocks used nitrogen & some sort of "paste" for damping and this required them to be mounted upside down ......

Somewhat dazed & confused these days ,
