For seven summers I've been riding with a Triumph summer screen fitted to my Bonneville. Right from the outset the wind buffeting on my head bothered me. Riding at highway speeds was very annoying, but most of my riding is not at highway speeds so I just put up with it.
Last year I bought a Givi fly screen, but never got around to putting it on. Since I've been into doing some mods lately I decided to do it now while I'm in the mood. I took the summer screen off and fitted the Givi.
How well it works, and whether I'll like it, remains to be seen after the riding season starts.
In the meantime, here it is.

I had a summer screen on my Tiger and like you got tired of the buffeting at highway speeds. Now with a stock screen all is better. . . maybe not perfect but ALOT better. Looking forward to reports on all your projects once you get on the road again.

It looks good, Rocky. You are spot on about the buffeting with the summer screen. I have/had one on both of my Bonnies. I put up with the buffeting because of the good air flow on hot summer days. I have ridden with the summer screen to NC and back several times.

After fitting the Givi fly screen, I looked at it for a while, but didn't like the way the lower edge jutted forward like a lip over the top of the headlight - although it doesn't look that way in the picture above. To me, it needed to be back a bit to form a better silhouette - and there was plenty of room to move it back.
I checked the mounting hardware and I had the correct kit so my only choices were to accept it as is or make new brackets. I chose the latter.
I had a small sheet of steel plate of the right thickness so I made a pattern from some stiff card stock and drew it on the steel plate. With the use of a hacksaw, a drill press (pillar drill) and some files I made two new brackets that set the screen back 20mm (13/16"). That doesn't seem like much for the effort involved, but when I dry-fitted the screen it looked much better.
I have an eloctroless nickel plating kit so mixed up a bath and cooked it on the stove for an hour which gave the new brackets a rust-free coating. 95% of the hardware is out of sight, but I still wanted to prevent rust in this salt air environment.
This is the eloctroless nickel kit cooking on the stove.

These are the finished brackets. The new ones are on the bottom. Because of the glare they are a bit hard to photograph.
So, do I know how to utilize winter down time or not :y2: :y15:

Your new ones look better than the original Rocky
I am very impressed with that nickel plating, does it require painting as well, or is that coating sufficient on its own to keep out the elements.

No, painting isn't required. The nickel is a hard coating and very durable. It's used a lot in the firearms industry and holds up well.
The thickness of the plating depends on how long you cook it in the bath. For use outside, such as on a motorcycle, it takes 60 minutes to put a mere 1 thou (25 micron) finish on an object.
For firearms an 0.5 thou finish is all that is needed - according to the instructions.
I'm pleased with the result and the screen is back on the bike.
Between you and I, I'm a little pleased with myself that things turned out so well he, he, he :y15:

We're getting pounded by a late winter snow storm today so your offer is starting to sound good. More coming on Friday by the sounds of it CRY
