Thats a HARD decision trying to replace the BEST bike on the planet.........however the Scrambler is cool (very cool always wanted one of those) DAYTONA is freakin awesome (but uncomfortable as I am sure you know) I don't see you as a cruiser guy........leaves the Tigers -----Like the new Explorer (but I dislike shaft drive I won't go into it here --but they have had some issues with it) that leaves 2 and the really cool looking green Tiger just above this post.....sweet perfection :y15:
Problem solved. Yer welcome.

I know what you mean about the shaft, never been too interested in a shaft driven bike. I've been reading up on the shaft and they did have some issues with it but the latest reports I saw were showing improvement.

I DO like the khaki XC, they sure look good in that color.

The T-birds are sweeeeeet and I've always had a hankering for one but as a second bike, not the primary bike. The Rlll would also fill a second bike role.

The Daytona, always like them and would like to ride one, once. They just aren't for me.

The Scrambler, especially in that color is awesome.

I've narrowed the choice down to 3 bikes, but could change my mind when I actually get down to see them.

The order of how I'm leaning. . .

1. 800 XC
What can I say? No one that has one has anything bad to say about them.

2. Explorer
Had some new model issues but reports are improving. I've talked to more folks that have them and love 'em than I've talked to folks that have 'me and have issues. Still some more reading needs to be done.

3. Explorer XC
From the ones I've talked to they love 'em. But when I look at the price. . . Well I could dang near get two 800 XC's.

I haven't ruled any of the 3 out yet but the TEX XC is tethering over the edge and about to fall off the list.

Well I won't be bashful I would nail that green 800 and farkle the sh** out of it......still have money left (to buy me a beer at Barber lol) and never have to worry if that shaft is gonna shat the bed and dump you in the middle of the interstate somewhere. Sorry, I know I am being a dic* about the shaft (oh you just can't beat my humor ----I should be charging you all for these gems) anyway. And its never happened to me...I have only had 2 shaft drive bikes ever, and neither for more than a few months they where both Suzukis BTW.....but I have broken chains on bikes......I have seen chains broken in racing situations, street situations etc. etc. I never saw anyone injured. They break they fall off......you coast to a stop. When the shaft implodes........back wheels lock up.....people get hurt. Sorry I was eagerly awaiting the Explorer the minute I saw the shaft drive it went in the "not for me" category. But as stated previously I have a foul mouth and a bad attitude........so don't listen to me much.
And the 800 you can stick some semi knobbies on and roost in the dirt. :y2:

Now go test drive the shi* outta some bikes man. take a day and have a freakin ball. See if you can get a knee down while on the Daytona. :y15:

I hear ya. That shaft is the one bad thing in my mind about the Explorer. I've been talking to a TEX rider that lives about 20 miles west of me so I'm getting his take on the bike. Everything sounds great and the dealer made him one heck of a deal on a 2013 non-XC but it still has that shaft. I plan on riding everything I can throw a leg over and I'm pretty sure I can get a knee down on that Daytona, it's short enough when I go to throw my leg over it I can put my knee down on the seat with no problem :y2:

Believe you me, I've been thinking about all the farkles I can do on an 800XC with the money saved. :chicken: And still be able to afford a 'Bama Irish beer or two for you.

LoL Bama Irish now thats a hard drinkin hard fightin combo for trouble there. Man wish I where closer would have to go along to "assist" in the testing, work the stop watch for the time trials on the Daytona and such. :y2: Have a big time man. It is YOUR birthday present remember. 1 of them gals is gonna speak to you in a voice you just can't resist. :y15::y6:

Tony, Dilligaf, who used to be on this forum bought an new Explorer, He loved the bike, but ran into one problem after another with it. Those troubles included the shaft. Triumph bought it back from him. I think you would really enjoy an 800XC.

Yeah.....what he said! :y15::y2:
I mean you'll be giving up 155cc's and some HP but..........(oh NO he di'nt....oh NO he di'nt.....) O yes I did......

just messin whicha man.......:y2:

That's what keeps popping up when folks start talking about issues with the bike.

ECM problems, heads having to be replaced and a shaft issue every now and then. I plan to ride one but not purchase.

Just thinking out loud here, placing my thoughts where I can see them instead of just letting them run loose in my head. Your comments still welcome.

I've been reading a lot about the 800 and 800XC. I've now add the 800 to the list which has now been narrowed down to just the 800 and 800XC. My observations so far on the 2 from what I know of the two and what I've read from Triumph and a couple other model specific forums. . .

800
1. Great Bike
2. Tire selection almost limitless with tubed and tubeless tires available
3. A little less suspension travel
4. Lower fuel economy (don't understand this one but it's what Triumph is posting)
5. Not log jumping friendly but I have The Great Pumpkin for that
6. About a $1000 less MSRP
7. Cast wheels
8. I test rode an 800 during the 800 introduction party - awesome bike and it really surprised me with the way it handled
9. Actually closer to the same set up as the Girlie

800 XC
1. Great Bike
2. Tire selection limited to tubed tires with fewer DOT 21" tires available
3. More of an off-road suspension
4. Higher fuel economy (don't understand this one but it's what Triumph is posting)
5. Capable of log jumping but I have The Great Pumpkin for that
6. About a $1000 more MSRP
7. Adventure bike styling
8. Laced wheels
9. Some think the 21" front wheel is a little twitchy on road, I like the idea of a 21" front tire
10. Haven't test rode on. . . YET
11. Actually my top pick for the next one in the garage . . . but the 800 does have some good points in it's favor

First off, I am biased. I went through the same drill as you are going through. The price difference was in the forefront of my mind. Fuel mileage was not a factor. Keep in mind that I do not have an off road bike.

I tried both and tried both two up. Two up, the rear suspension was noticeably better and appreciated by the pillion (Mae Lyne). Solo, the suspension was better, too. My thoughts were that would carry over to loading the bike for trips. I wanted a dual sport that I could easily take off the pavement when traveling as most of my off pavement riding is done on trips. I appreciate the 21" front wheel.

I have since put 12,000 miles on the bike making two runs to NC and back. The XC certainly holds it own on the super slab and in the twisties. I can easily adjust the rear suspension for whatever load I am carrying. One has to noticeably put the 21" wheel into a turn; but once there, it stays planted. The 800 was easier to put into a turn - sorta like my Bonnie. However after I got used to hit I hardly notice it now.

In the end, it was Mae Lyne who told me to get the XC (which I was favoring anyway). I am really glad I made that choice. It is best all around bike I have owned in 56 years of riding. That said, both are excellent bikes. From what I know of your riding style, I think you would be happier with the XC for the sames reasons that I am.

As you know I test rode the 800 last year in Austria, and like you I was very impressed with the bike from the moment I slung my leg over it, to the overall riding position, till the moment I had to get off of it. In that short 15 min's or so I fell in love with it, I could not fault anything about it. If I were asked to choose between the 800 or the 800XC, I'd go for the 800, purely because I like to tour and I'd more than likely never go off road with it anyway. I have my DR350 for that. But I understand that where you live you more than likely have the opportunity to venture on the dirt now and again. I also like the idea of cast wheels for one main reason, you can fix a puncture at the side of the road 9 times out of 10, with laced wheels your going to have to change the tube their and then or wait for the tow truck to come and pick you up.
Both are brilliant bikes, and I doubt that you'll be disappointed no matter what one you choose.

Look at what I just found. . . WOW[DOUBLEPOST=1395000960,1395000857][/DOUBLEPOST]Didn't buy it, but man oh man, that's sweet!
