Hi SD

Is the NGK CR8EK the Champion equivilent?

Hi Mike,

Not exactly, as the NGK is just slightly cooler, has a resistor and has the twin earth electrodes. My local motorcycle mechanic put me onto them and he seems to have got it right. The insulator colour is a perfect light tan brown and the rest of the plug burns clean. I use 98 octane unleaded fuel and the engine runs sweetly. No stalling at the traffic lights, will sit and idle indefinitely and pulls away smoothly. I went for the NGK plugs as I could not obtain the G63 Champions locally. The NGK's 8 heat range is the equivalent to the Champion's 61 which is slightly cooler than the 63. I hope this helps.

Mike,

Fitted a sealed beam headlight to comply with the Australian regulations....the filiment only lasted a month. Have now fitted a semi sealed H4 beam with a halogen 60 / 55W bulb. Infinitely better! Procured it from B J Bikes & Bits in Wooloongabba (07) 3391 7322. Hope this helps

Got one at the local car accessory shop $35, from a past experiance i found out these 7" H4 lamp were pretty much standard fittment to most 70's cars (Mini etc).

Thanks anyway SD.

Got a chance to get some workdone on the bike this weekend, so started of on the basic service stuff. Although the seller had clearly done some work to the bike including changing the oil, (it was still clean) i still wanted to know what was in there.

As the pics show, there was abit of sludge in the filter and what looked like welding residue? as crude as it is the top hat filter seems to have done it's job (hopefully) as there was only a small amount of very fine sludge in the bottom of the sump cover. The crankcase filter was clean and poke around inside with a bit of wire never produced anything nasty. I reckon both the sump cover and CC filter had never been removed before, and believe it or not the bike does not drop oil (Honestly) even with a perished o-ring on the CC filter.

The gearbox oil was replacedat the same time, and it was also quite clean with no signs of moisture (I’ve read the gearbox can be prone to condensation build up). New plugs fitted and a quick test ride to make sure nothing leaked, all good and the new plugs showed a notisable difference. However, I’m now certain the carbs are out of sync! at WOTthe bike pulls fine, but around ¼ to ¾ throttle it does not feel right? Ran out of time to investigate further so this will have to wait until next time.

I reckon it was the scale off the steel where it is welded, judging by the amount of mig spatter just inside the oil (tube) tank not a lot of time was spent cleaning up after the frame was welded! I stuck some clean rags up inside the oil (tube) tank and they came out pretty clean, so at least most of the scummy stuff was at the bottom.

Tank off for access to thecarbs and check the tappets, front rocker cover starting to weep a little andgasket fell apart when taking cover off. Rear gasket came off intact but well overduefor replacement, initial inspection of the valves showed nothing amiss.

Looks like someone before hasspray painted the top off the engine to tidyit up, as the rocker covers had overspray on the ridges which (SD pleaseconfirm) should be plain polished alloy. A light rub with ultra fine steel wooluncover nice shiny alloy.

Still waiting for somegaskets to arrive, will check and adjust the tappet clearances in the meantime.

Hi Mike,

You are quite right. The ridges of the rocker covers are polished. While you are in amoungst the rockers, just check that the correct rockers are in their correct place. Looking at your photo, it appears that all four rocker arms have an E stamped on them. This indicates that they are all exhaust rockers. The inlet rockers should have IN stamped on them. Check that the tappet adjuster screw sits centrally over the valve stem, as the inlet valves being larger, are set wider apart and therefore required a different rocker. Mine had an inlet rocker on the RH exhaust valves. This miss match of the rockers was common from the factory. Let me know how you go. I will be away until Monday.....checking out the V8 supercar racing in Townsville this weekend.

Well spotted SD! I'll check that out today...

where did you source the correct rocker?

Apart from being handed I think the rockers all the same, when i measured the width of both the IN and EX arms they were the same but the holes for adjuster are drilled off centre on to deal with the different widths. if you were stuck you could weld the up and drill and tap new holes.... found 2 new ones in the UK (asked to confirm if they had "I" on them) $50.

Possibly a contributing factor to my carb balance niggle.... now, these rubbers are unique to the TSS with Bings. As far as I'm aware the TSS was only fitted with Bings for the US market, and after e-mailing 6 or so triumph parts supplers in the US where did i find the only pair left in the world............

Reg Allen in London!

Big thanks to the guys at Big D Cycle for the tip... Reg Allen told me they had one pair left but were keeping them to get copies made, I tried to buy both pairs with the idea of selling the the spare set to Sea Dog for 10 times the price:y2:

Waiting for parts.......

Found this on the WWW note the all alloy engine and seat cowl, intended for the1984 model year i think?

Hi Mike,

Great that you have found the rocker arms you need. I sourced mine from TMS in Nottingham, UK. Now, regarding the fire sale, super discounted, buy one get one free carb rubbers. Mine are definitely showing their age. If you are fortunate enough to find another pair, I would happily scratch around in my wife / teenage kid ravaged, moth eaten wallet and shake out a few coins to cover all costs of procurement.

I like the mods to the '84 TSS. The rear set footpegs would be great. I notice in the photo that the gearshift lever has a linkage on it to facilitate the repositioned pegs. Very neat.

Thanks for the photos and update of your bike.

I did try to buy both pairs but they would only sell the one set.... might be worth following up with them to see when they are getting the copies made
http://www.reg-allen-london.co.uk/index.htm they replied to my e-mail 1st time quite quickly, but then had to call to follow up...

Any parts stuff of TSS interest I come across I'll let you (all) know - don't happen to know if a RH side panel is availible would you?

Check out the Norman Hyde website, they do a footrest kit for the T140 that might fit the bill.. or these (see pics) are availible on ebay (normally)
