Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

Most of the parts that will be Cadmium plated; Pancho still has all the fasteners & hardware from the chassis that he'll bring over sometime next week.

Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

Clutch centre was pretty badly grooved, I had a spare in much better shape.

Washed parts and new rubbers ready to go together...

Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

To install the cush rubbers, I clamp a clutch hub in the vice, slip the centre housing over the splined shaft, insert the large rubbers, apply some torque with my clutch holder tool, and insert the small rubbers. Piece of cake.

All the new parts mentioned previously have arrived, except the transmission main bearing.

More parts have arrived. Tranny main bearing, Sparx electronic ignition & alternator, and the Amal 930 carb rebuild kit.

Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

. It amazes me how easilly you guys in the USA get parts!!!

GP. I don't want to be giving "The Master" advice BUT, it may be a good idea to remove those scrapings at the bottom of the hex' in the sludge tube retainer.
That thing changes direction "quite often" and the inertia may cause them to fatigue and detach themselves.

Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

Head is clean, came out real nice. It's going to need all 4 valves & guides (I figured that before I ever opened it up)

Cases are spiffy clean and ready for all new bushings; crank assembly & installation will start immediately afterward.

We're on the uphill...

Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

The next three days are going to be "fast and furious" due to the fact that we were out of town last week from Thursday to Saturday, and I'll be heading to The Texas Mile this coming Thursday morning.

So, I popped the cases into the oven at 250 for 15 minutes while the bearings sat in a ziploc in the ice tray of the freezer. They popped right in with a minimum of friendly persuasion. (Oven photo only shows the Triumph tranny inner cover with a Norton gearbox, the main cases came a few minutes later).

Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

Polished out the connecting rods and installed them with new bearing shells and a dab of 10/30 oil on the crank journals. (before & after)

DSC04388.JPG

Torqued the rod nuts to spec. A 5-second video is almost 5 MEGABYTES!!!! (so, no video) Anyway, you drop the small ends and they just "float" down till they stop against the shop towel bumpers I had between the crank cheeks to cover the vice jaws. Nice.

Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

Next small step is all I can do until the fresh cad plated hardware arrives...

I took the output shaft/gear and new bearings to my friend's house to press the new bearings in. First, selected the closest fit deep socket to shove the old needle bearings out. Then, pressed the new ones in. I really need to get a small press of my own; "in the new house..."

Back in the shop, I installed the tranny mainshaft bearing & retainer snap ring, then the seal. Cleaned up and installed the shifting camplate before slipping the output shaft/gear in.

Trying to install the output shaft/gear without the seal to help align the critically tight rollers is a nightmare; I wasted a half hour before I remembered this. Just need the cad plated nut, and this step is done.

Great Progress Paul...

Was even better to see in person yesterday morning. Thank again and have fun at the Texas Mile.

Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

A few updates, but still waiting on the cad plated hardware to begin serious assembly.

The tranny mainshaft key was stripped, and the clutch hub had been spinning uselessly; this caused a bit of scarring which I ground down carefully so as not to go too deep or unevenly.

Good thing I didn't waste cad plating on the rear sprocket...

Re: Triumph 750 engine overhaul start to finish

At last, the top end parts arrived! Just dropped off the valves, guides, pistons & rings at the machine shop; they'll be ready tomorrow.

Also got in the chain adjusters and rear brake pedal return spring.
