AJ, what size is your generator? When I lived in the boondocks, I had two - one to run the house (excluding the air conditioner and the electric stove) and one to run the pump for my well water. You could run your heating unit pump on a generator.

I don't recall what size it is and I'm too lazy to look....lol. I just need the refrigerator and a lamp or two.

I'm OK without heat...dress warm and I have those old fashioned gas logs in the fireplace (this house is 159 years old!).

Besides...the furnace is hard wired into the house's electrical system and only has a huge old master switch to shut it down if needed. We rarely ever have outages so there's no pigtail to tap into the main at all.

I built a pigtail using #8 appliance cable. I back feed my generator into the dryer plugin. Of course I turn off the master switch to the house first and then I close any breakers for circuits I don't want to use - the water heater, electric stove, air conditioning, etc. That way I have most of my house running: lights, television, computer, refrigerator, microwave, etc.

Right. But I haven't lived here long and it is very rare that we ever get power outages.............so nothing like that has ever been done. I'll just run an HD extension cord to my refrigerator and then to a couple lamps.

I'm also figuring that it won't be anywhere near like they are predicting around here. I'm about 7 hours driving time from Philly and Philly isn't even on the coast. Then we have the mountains to shield us.

Yesterday, we were still under the extensive cloud cover of Sandy. Mabel and I took her mother to Miami for her flight back to Argentina. It was cloudy and cool most of the way. Around West Palm Beach, I could see the edge of the cloud cover.About 20 minutes later we drove out from under the cloud cover into bright late afternoon sunshine, clear skies and 15 degree warmer temps. It was like stepping out of the door of a dimly lit building into bright sunshine. Florida dodged a bullet with Sandy.

To all of you in her path, batten down and stay safe. I hope you come through unscathed.

It's being reported that in terms of area this storm is the second largest on record.
If Sandy holds to the the expected track it will hook inland towards central Canada and eventually pass to the north of us here on the coast. Even so, we're going to get heavy rain on Tuesday into Wednesday along with gusting winds.
Storm warnings are out for the coastal areas due to wind gusts and tidal surges. That's no problem for me here in the city or for my cottage peoperties as they're very far inland and on a lake.
In the meantime, sitting and waiting.

In Sandy's aftermath it is quite cool here for this time of year. Our high today and tomorrow will be 69F/20.5C and 68F/ 20C respectively with lows around 48 F/10C . It is quite breezy.

Was and still is.

It looks like we in Pittsburgh might dodge the heavy snow part now as the models are showing it swing from the Atlantic, into Pennsylvania, but making a right turn right at the Allegheny mountains and turning North into New York State. The snow will fall in the mountains, but we on the Western side of them will get spared that part. I hope they are right.

They are still talking about lots of rain and high winds that may take down trees and power lines in this area.

It's morning here now, but by this afternoon the winds should begin and last through Tuesday.
