Hi Chuck,

The brass face of the thrust washer faces out and mates with the clutch basket / primary chain sprocket. The steel rollers run against the steel face of the washer.

What repair / project are you doing?

Cheers

Thanks for the reply..I just bought a '76 T140. I rode it when I first looked at it. Later, after I got it home, I decided to take it down the road to heat the oil up for changing. I pushed it a little and it ran fine.. seemed to vibrate more than normal.. Changing the oil, I decided to check the other fluids.. Tranny had about 2 drops of oil in there ! It was then I decided to go over the whole bike.. Found a lot of loose hardware, including the top motor mount.. very loose! Couple of the mount nuts finger tight! Changed all the oils, checked for more loose hardware.. Satisified it was ready to ride, I took it down the road again.. This time pushed it harder.. Ran great and the bad vibe was gone . I did notice that the clutch was slipping when really pushed. Brought it back home and decided to pull the primary off, grease the rollers and service the clutch.. The front nut holding the rotor was almost finger tight! The locking washer was mangled, not doing it's job. When I got the clutch basket and front pulley off, I saw the thrust washer was badly worn, sharp edges.. the hole in the middle was way too big.. I ordered a new one along with the lock washer. The primary chain was a little loose and showed evidence of rubbing on the bottom of the primary in the past. The clutch discs look almost new.. I will wash them in gas. Oil leaking out of the tranny appears to be coming from the kicker shaft.I plan on restoring this bike, but want to ride it more before I tear it down. In the mean time, I have been gathering parts.. I have bought over 90 items from ebay, including a set of very nice oem chrome fenders, oem grab bar, oem handle bars, both oem gages, OEM cast tail light bracket, new chrome exhaust, K&N filters, fiberglass side covers (getting rid of the stock airbox setup).. and on and on.. posted this pic of it before.. hope to one day have an "after" picture. :)

Getting a bike that nice all in one piece and running is light years ahead of the game.
I did the same thing; rode it as is the first summer and then tore it apart the following winter.
Good luck and enjoy TUP

The clutch basket thrust washer came in several variants; one has tabs that slot into the center hub holes and keep it aligned, as it's center opening size is not matched to the hub shoulder size. Bad/wierd design, but all you have to do is grease it in place along with the rollers.

Hi Chuck,

Your bike looks great. Smart move picking up all the parts before you start the overhaul and riding it to see what is required. Enjoy the project :y54:

Thanks guys :) If it was up to me, I would have it apart now, but I have been working on my Harley for the last year and really need to get it back together before I start on another project.

I got a major tranny leak on the Truimp that I need to address, pretty sure it's coming from the kicker shaft ..

I saw that one, but decided to stick with the type that was in there.. maybe the wrong decision. (?)
