I now have the YouTube account set up, not going to upload until I sort out the MovieMaker.

I tried again with MovieMaker and used "best quality for playback" but it came out reduced to poor quality (again).

I looked at the MM properties and found this. Looks like I'm locked into windows 95 even though I'm running XP.

I'm becoming a bit frustrated.SAD

Kev look at those other settings, there where it says "video for pocket PC" You should get a few other option in that drop down cannot remember what they are now but a pocket PC would be poor quality as it is a small screen as in cell phone. I have not used it for ages so I may be wrong but give it a go anyway unless Harry can give you some better advice here

Kev, My limited experience is in fact with Windows Live Movie Maker on win 7 but I fired up my old xp machine so I could see what you see to a point, so you will have to bear with me.

Before you do any thing else, copy and save the clip you wish to edit from your SD card to a folder in your PC and work with that.
This leaves the original in untouched mode so you can get it again if you make a major whoops.

Point 1 and I found this in WLMM.
Do NOT do the final save untill you have finished all editing as every time you resave it will drop the quality. Use the 'save project as' feature if you want to come back to edit.

Anyway, presuming you have finished editing and want to do your final save :
on the save movie page ,forget the best quality for playback and highlight either
a)' best fit to file size' and enter in a mb amount very close (round figures) to the size of the clip you edited (a right click on the clip on your pc will tell you this). This way it will save very close to origanal size rather than scale it down.
b)'other settings' and select either HQ video large, or HQ video Pal and see how these compare.

I would def recommend grabbing a short clip and trying different save settings without any editing and play around till you get a feel and preferences for the program.

did you try ticking the box 'run this program in compatibility mode for' and see if you get any other choices,ie XP ?

If not I would leave it unchecked.

BTW, just did a bit of a google and if your XP is running service pack 2 you should be able to download Windows Live Movie Maker. I dont actually know if its a lot more friendly, but it is what a few of us here are using.

Harry thanks again, see I told you I wasn't switched on in this area.
There's a lot for me to think about and look at in your post.
I always work with copied files regardless of what they are, so I've got that OK.
I have service pack 3.

Have just come back on Kev and did a bit more research and it seems Windows Live Movie Maker will not run on XP regardless of what service pack it is running.
But I did find this

Cheers Harry, I watched that as presented and THINK it will help but viewing within the forum was too small. I've saved the address and will STUDY it later today. I've got a bit on today but early evening I'll be onto it.

I just followed along with those vid instructions post # 25, I put a title on, trimmed it, all great EXCEPT, at 3 min 33 sec his saving instruction was exactly how I'd figured it and ended up with another rubbish quality vid. SAD

It will take me a little while but I'm now going to look at and try your instructions given in post # 23.

Problems !!!

Harry I saw this in your post,

"BTW, just did a bit of a google and if your XP is running service pack 2 you should be able to download Windows Live Movie Maker. I dont actually know if its a lot more friendly, but it is what a few of us here are using."

so I downloaded (actually tried to) Windows Live Movie Maker and ended up with a number of problems including additional tool bars. I was also told that Windows Live Movie Maker won't work on my machine. Finally I cleared extra tool bars and got Google back as my home page but each time I open Firefox I get this.

EDIT,

Looks like I fixed it, Sharron and I Goggled the text and followed some instructions, all confusing but it looks OK now.

Tried your option A, no good, the max it allows me to put in is 7 MB.

Tried your option B, HQ video large gave me a finished job of 6.91 MB, tried HQ video Pal finished job of 9.17 MB. My original vid is 78.6 MB.
To go from 78 MB to 7 or 9 MB the vid quality is very noticeable.

Methinks you would be wise to upgrade to a Windows 7 machine. I still have one XP machine; but I no longer use it.

You may be on the money with that comment. For me the XP has worked for everything but we may have found it's limitations. I'm in no hurry, I'll roll with it for a little time and if I find out XP can't do the job I'll update.
11.00PM time to hit the sack.

Sorry about that Kev,
I should have edited that out of my post rather than comment on it in my following one.
could have saved you the heartache.
As for the saving issues, it has me flummoxed.

Tried your option A, no good, the max it allows me to put in is 7 MB.

Tried your option B, HQ video large gave me a finished job of 6.91 MB, tried HQ video Pal finished job of 9.17 MB. My original vid is 78.6 MB.

Kev,I'm sorry but we may have issues, so at this point dont rush out and buy a GoPro.
To get on the same wavelength as you I fired up my xp machine and win movie maker and grabbed a 105 mb,mp4 file of my w7 pc which is an original file straight from the gopro

Issue I
It would seem that movie maker does NOT support MP4 file format which is the default GoPro file output.
I cant be sure if your service pack 3 version is any different, but a quick search at my end suggests it is a known issue.(to check yours for sure,in WMM,check the supported file types in the load movie menu.)

I then grabbed the same short clip which I had edited on WLMM and it was an AVI file of 73.4 meg. This was recognized by WMM on the xp machine, so I dragged it straight down to the timeline and hit save.

Issue 2
In the save options the best I could aciheve was

in best quality for my comp = 720 by 576 res at 15.7 mb
in best fit to file size it would not allow me to select higher than 15mb
in other settings/High Quality Video Pal = 720 by 576 res at 15.7 mb or High Quality Video Large = 640x480 res at 7.8 mb

In no way could I select a larger format (higher res ) to save at, and in fact when saved it came out at 14.7 mb.

So I'm sorry mate,I,m thinking we are at the limits of WMM.
My suggestions would be
a) live with the limitations of WMM
b) search for an editing program which will work on XP, support mp4, and allow you more flexibility in saving size options. http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ Power director looks reasonable for the money.
c) consider upgrading to a 7 machine.( this by no means HAS to be a full blown desktop set up, there are many laptop options available which you could run in conjunction with your current set up.

Sorry I couldn't come up with a simple fix for you.

Problem just about sorted.
Been painting at my daughters most of the day but got home 2 hours ago and ducked into my mum's place (next door), she has a new Windows 7 machine that she can't use properly (82 years old). She is constantly complaining that it isn't as good (read different) as her old XP. On her Windows 7 machine I downloaded Live Movie Maker then shoved in a flash drive with a 78.6 MB vid. I trimmed the start and ending, saved it on the default setting and ended up with a vid of 54.0 MB. That's a win compared with the problems over the last couple of days.

Bonus that I'm not sure about accepting is mum wants to swap her Windows 7 for my XP, hmmmm, don't want to exploit her but she hates Windows 7.
