My recent interest in this subject is bouncing about in a couple of threads so I'll start over and add to this over the next couple of days.
Being totally new to bike mounted cameras I figured I'd just buy from the market leader and get the latest one out. Turns out GoPro have a top of the line arriving this week called Hero 3 Black Edition, not actually in the shops but my name goes onto one, "come back Friday". Price will be $498 + $40 for suction mount. At the same time I find a cheap $130 camera reduced for the Christmas sales to $99. Sure it's not a GoPro but it's also a $439 saving, I decide to spend the extra money and stay with the big name. I'm getting a bit of a run around with the delivery so decide to grab the cheap camera and if it's OK I'm up some $$$ but if it's a dud I'm only down $99 and have two cameras to muck about with.

The cheap $99 job, I don't even know the brand name. BLUSH

I tried this mounting position and gave it a quick run down the road.

This is the result.

At the end of that vid I pulled over and tried this mount.

Tomorrow I'll post a vid from that mount, some still shots and I'll try it underwater.

Wow for a cheap camera it gives a great video TUP Well if you end up with two you could have the one facing forward and the other backwards and with a bit of editing you could put together a great clip. Waiting to see how the other one comes out now

Yup, as I said elsewhere Kev,the Quality is well beyond its price point
As a matter of interest.what was the resolution setting.?

Ya had to start asking hard questions didn't ya.
Looking at the booklet I see,
Image resolution, 5M(2592x1944),3M(2048x1536),M1(1280x1024)
Video resolution, VGA:640x480(60fps),720P:1280x720(30fps)
I have no idea what I shot that vid on but I'll sort it out soon.
The follow up vid from mirror mount is being processed by Vimeo just now so will post soon. It will also be in the default mode.

Just took this still shot into the yard on an overcast morning, set on 5M (2592x1944), I'm going to win any comps with it.
The second shot taken with my iPhone 4S as a comparison.

When the second shot took twice as long to load up I checked the properties of each,
first photo, 1.19 MB
second photo, 4.19MB

Shoved it into the end of the pool for a quick still, interesting how you get the reflection from the water surface. Later today I'll get in and try a vid underwater.

That is only 826KB, still set on 5M.

Tricky one. First is good as you can see what the rider is doing, but second shows more scenery/road. Save us the trouble of deciding and buy a second camera :y23:

You may just be onto something with that suggestion.
When I have time I'm going to make a small trolley to pull behind my bike and mount the camera at road level. I've seen it on Youtube and it's very impressive. You get the scenery with the bike / rider in the middle of shot leaning left and right.

The follow up to post #1, this is the vid shot when I stopped and moved the camera to the mirror mount.
Comments on preferred position vid 1 or 2?

https://vimeo.com/54677966

No 1, even with its limited left visibility is a clear winner as it involves you more in whats happening and is definitely more stable. Mind you, I do get the feeling the bulk of the instability may be down to the SD card.
BTW, will that bar mount work on your bar, as it may be a little more stable and you could position it to include a little of your bike.

I am still amazed at the quality. I did notice a little shake of the mirror stalk showing up. It is certainly no big deal. I like the view from that position.

Thanks for comments so far.
I tried it underwater in the vid mode and was happy with the raw result. Then I ran it through Movie maker to trim it down, the trimming worked but it isn't as big on screen and not as clear now, comments? Then put it into Vimeo. They said no more HD for a week and it's not playing properly so not posting yet. Hey you really don't have to see an old bloke in Speedos swimming underwater. :y13:
I just checked properties, it started at 78.6MB, only trimmed a small bit from beginning and end but came out at only 2.96MG.
Any better way to do this stuff than Vimeo? Must point out I'm on the cheapskate $0 membership.

When you save in moviemaker, you should be able to select the res settings at which to save.
If you are shooting in 1280 by 720, then save at that res.If you select a higher res to save at, it cant improve the quality, but will increase the display and file size. If you select a lower res it will drop the quality, the display size and the file size.

re the vimeo limits, forget them and open a U Tube account. It is free and no limits that I know of.
If you upload to u tube you can select private or public viewing.
If you select private, only those you supply the link to can view,( good if your vid contains anything you could get in trouble for), public is public.

Looks like I've got it mounted directly to h/bar now, problem is my bars are tapered but I've worked around it.

I did notice a little shake of the mirror stalk showing up.

I think I've sorted that problem as mentioned above.

Harry thanks for those two helpful pointers.
I'll play with Movie Maker and attempt to sort out an account with YouTube.
Trying to understand this fully, with YouTube set to private then I send the link to the forum, do forum members require a password? I'm thinking regardless we should use caution re speedo showing etc.

The still shots are stunning, love the one under the water very cool camera. The video view in the last one is great but it seems to have a bit more vibration than the first

Vimeo only allows 1 HD vid per week, so the second vid firstly isn't HD and camera was mounted on mirror stem, hopefully it's sorted as mentioned above. Fingers crossed. As Harry suggested it's a bit of fun working these things out. If I get it working well I'll stick with this $99 camera till I out grow it.

Yup, every time you go to upload a movie you will get a couple of choices to make, one of them being whether the vid will be public, unlisted or private. If you select unlisted, only those who follow the link (posted by you) can access the vid. If you select public then it will be available to anyone who searches U tube.Private requires a password set by you.
When I uploaded my vids I went to the unlisted setting when I knew there were parts where I may have exceeded speed limits.
On the "Out of the Maungakotukatuka Valley ' vid where I had stayed within the limits and the recent ones where I have adjusted the cam out of speedo range I put them in public as there are no issues.

BTW,when you upload a vid to U tube, when it has uploaded,if you get a message "we have detected a shake in your video.would you like us to fix it." then decline. I hit ok once, and it took longer for them to fix,(read hours ) then it took me to upload, and the result was worse than if they had left it.
