I gotta say, give me 3rd world SA's climate any day.

I'd actually hibernate for the winter particularly when you have arctic vortex's, ice storms and 10ft deep snow.

Stay safe and warm Rocky.

What can I say. It's winter in Canada. It comes, you deal with it, and it goes - eventually :y2:
We're well prepared for winter and it is what it is.
One of the joys of being retired is that I don't have to go anywhere in bad weather.
If we have a big snow storm I clear the snow from the sidewalk and driveway then wait until the streets and roads are clear before taking my car out - if I want or need to go out.

A friend of mine from SA emigrated to Canada a couple of years ago. They're in Toronto and sent me pics of the ice-storm and the damage done to their home and surrounding area. They had no electricity or communications either. Fortunately, they'd shipped a few crates of good SA wines to TO when the emigrated so they lit the fire, opened a bottle and enjoyed their isolation.

I can tell you that my little S'African friend is not handling this very well but she's found a great excuse to go shopping for a winter wardrobe :y2:

My neighbours two doors over are from SA and have lived there for about 25 years. I don't know how long he was in Canada before that - if at all.
They seem to be coping with winter OK - not that they have any choice :y2:
My sister and mother live together in Toronto and lost power for about 24 hours during that severe ice storm which wasn't too bad.
They live in a modern well insulated condo so didn't suffer too much.

I think with us we don't have all the cold weather equipment you guys have so only having our winters as a reference it is hard to understand that you guys are able to get through a winter.

Rocky, here's a perspective on how I know I wouldn't cope - when I eat an ice-cream, I have to put a jumper on.

When I was living in the US, I went to Alaska for a client project - to say I nearly died is an understatement. I know the greenie-beanies are going to have me for this and I do not support wearing animal furs at all, but for the Alaska trip, I was kitted out with arctic gear by my client including a pair of seal-skin gloves - warmest things I've ever owned in my life but it still wouldn't convince me to live in your conditions. Snow is beautiful on Christmas cards but to live in it is a completely different story and I'm a wuss anyway :y2:

"put a jumper on" that was fun knee!!!!!!!!
Our wardrobes consist of clothes for spring and fall, summer, and winter.
We're well equipped to handle most anything as the seasons change - which includes tools for all seasons too.
As I said elsewhere, it come and it goes and we don't think that much about it - unless we get hit with severe weather and then we're not that happy about it CRY

The global warming crowd has been blaming the arctic vortex on global warming.

Time magazine put out an article saying as much. Then someone found an old Time magazine article from 1974 blaming an arctic vortex back then on global cooling.
