I'm totally freaked out by this story. I've seen Wild Dogs on the attack, chasing a pride of lion away from a kill then ripping what was left of the carcass apart - took minutes. For a child to die this way is just too unimaginably horrible; I can't even contemplate it.
I know it's an endangered species but if shooting 1 was the only way to get it away from the child, then so be it - sorry if this offends anyone.

The national media is camped out on this family's front lawn. People want the mother jailed.

In my opinion she's going to suffer by seeing her son ripped apart for the rest of her life. Word is that she's in Western Psychiatric Hospital and has been since it happened. Charging her with a crime is just piling-on.

Interviews here with her neighbors who's children played with this boy say the mother was a doting mom who loved her son deeply.

Eyewitnesses say the boy wanted to see the dogs better and got so excited that he bolted from her grasp.

Tragic all round. Unfortunately we are becoming so protected from risk, we no longer recognize it nor its consequences.

As motorcyclists we are very aware of the consequences of a fall. We must work hard at managing that risk every ride and protect ourselves by constantly improving skills and exercising maximum diligence.

Ride safe my friends.

Instead of flowers, they sent toy trucks.

A dump truck by Matchbox. A fire truck by Tonka. A mini mover by CAT.

These were the types of toys that Maddox Derkosh, the 2-year-old killed Sunday at the Pittsburgh Zoo, loved to play with and was good at sharing, said Betty Borzilleri, the office manager for William Slater II Funeral Service in Scott.

And it was the type of toy that his family asked people to donate after his death, to be given later to children's Christmas charities. By mid-morning today, about 100 little trucks were displayed at the Slater funeral home, many of them lined up on pedestals and tables that usually hold flowers. And by 4 p.m., Ms. Borzilleri said closer to 1,000 trucks had arrived at the funeral home.

For the most part, the people who sent the trucks -- dropping the small boxes in the driveway overnight, leaving them in the funeral home's foyer or having them delivered by mail -- did not know Jason and Elizabeth Derkosh of Whitehall, who lost their only child when he was mauled to death at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

The little boy had been visiting the zoo with his mother, and police said he fell 14 feet into the African painted dog enclosure after his mother lifted him into a standing position on the exhibit's railing to get a better view.

"It's a really scary thing, because every parent makes mistakes," said Andrea Richardson of Crafton.

Ms. Richardson did not know the family, but she could imagine their pain, and this morning she and her 2-year-old daughter, Norah, drove to the funeral home to drop off a cement mixer and dump truck from her family and from a friend.

"I hope that they know the whole community is mourning with them," said Ms. Richardson, who also has a 5-year-old. "It's just such a tragedy and we're so, so sorry for them."

The funeral home has received phone calls about sending toy trucks from as far away as Cleveland, Arizona, California and Canada, Ms. Borzilleri said.

There is no deadline for sending trucks, which can be delivered to William Slater II Funeral Service at 1650 Greentree Road, Scott, Pa. 15220, where a visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today.

Well.....a pretty disgusting update to this story:

The parents of the 2 year old boy are now suing the Pittsburgh Zoo.

How sad! The local law enforcement did not charge the Mother for her complete lack of common sense, safety, and neglectfulness in holding the child up on the railing in the first place.

Now they are saying the Zoo was negligent for not protecting the public from anyone who is completely irresponsible and beyond stupid!

When it first happened I wondered about them filing a law suit. Seems you can expect one these days to try and cover your stupidity, unfortunately it will cost the zoo unneeded expense to point out the parent's stupidity. Well that is if they get a good jury, otherwise it can and will cost them and the citizens of Pittsburgh a ton of money.
