Re: 1983 Triumph T140W 750 TSS; 8 valves & electric start! - GrandPaul

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the Google check. Is it advantageous to have a separate title in the forum to attract more the interest and hopefully drag a few more out of the woodwork. Being a unique Bonneville with its 8 valve engine a separate heading in the forum may more readily, attract current and prospective owners. Considering your experience with the website, would this be the case?
Cheers

Dave,

Thanks for considering this. The high ranking in Google does offer great access.

These things must be breeding in Queensland.

Hello Mike,

Well done finding a TSS. Mine is only rare by half now. :y1: Great to have another one in the country. Queenslanders must be very discerning. All the usual questions, where did you find it, condition, mileage, history, cost, etc, etc and photos when you get it home please.

I resprayed the head, rocker covers and barrels, then spent a lot of time with ever finer grades of wet and dry to get the result. I'm over the therapy now!

Something that may be of interest to you just to kick off, is that an extract from the works records can be obtained from the Vintage Motorcycle Club in Staffordshire UK. [email protected] I found them very helpful. All I needed to supply was the make, model and eng/chassis number and for about 12 pounds I had the certificate.

If I can assist with sourcing parts or handy hints, it would be a pleasure.

Bundeburg is about halfway for a ride some day.

Enjoy your TSS

Nothing to do with the TSS in particular, but did you replace the main bearings, if yes, where did your get them and what is your opinion on the C2 C3 clearance debate?

Mike.

I replaced the main bearings which I sourced from British Spares in New Zealand. [email protected]
Also found TMS in England very good for parts. [email protected]

Sorry, not up to speed on the C2 C3 debate. Please enlighten me.

Cheers

I'm referring to the drive side bearing here.

On the box the bearing came in the part number will readMRJA1.1/8 JC2 or C3 or possibly CN.

The C3 etc refers to the "fitted clearance" I.Ein the case when cooled, if the bearing (inner race) is a little tight or showsresistance in turning then the housing (case) it maybe slightly oval and a C3bearing would be needed (these have more fitted clearance) C2 no clearance andCN standard clearance.

This was explained far better in the Britbike forum (Ithink) where I read it.

Apparently the last of the T140's would have used a C2(by the way Triumph never changed the part number) as their machiningtolerances where much better.

I only came across this when looking for a supplier(usually get most of my stuff from British spares in NZ but they had none left)some articles by engine builders refer to clearance issues and others I spokento have never come across the problem.

My problem is the case on the ES I'm re-building has beenrepaired and machined around the bearing housing and when I refitted theoriginal bearing it was a little tight, but the bearing has no marks toindicate if it's a C3 or whatever.

Did the D/S one you bought have a part# MRAJ1.1/8J C2 ?

Clear as mud?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the information. Here I was living in ignorant bliss. Well the bearing box has long gone so that doesn't help. I tested the crank in the cases before assembling the the rods onto it and all was very smooth. So whatever size I have is a good fit. Lucky.

Cheers
