Ol' Copper Head.

Just about ready to cruise down Copper Head Road :y2:

Just returned from a 75 mile shake down run on the TSS. No oil leaks :y45: and running sweetly. Did a combination of around town and open road running. Just letting it cool down over night and will check the head nut torques and valve clearances in the morning.

Very happy with the outcome. :y54:

bugga
was kinda hoping you would have a wee leak and throw your toys outa the cot
then I could come over and get me a cheap good lookin bonnie.:y2:

By the way,

A big thanks to Lani Visconti of Copper Gaskets Unltd ( www.coppergaskets.us) for his very efficient service and precision cnc made gaskets. I gave Lani the dimensions of the head and manifold gasket rings, which he produced very accurately, and when I informed him of the accurate fit, he asked if it was OK if he made more and offered them for sale. A true gentleman. TUP

YEE HAA!

only problem you have now is without that fine mist of oil you have no rust protection for the bike.. and don't you live near the ocean:y13: fix one problem and another appears...

Bother! If the oil don't weep, the rust won't sleep. After each ride, will have to spray the entire bike with chain lube. TUP That sorts that problem :y2:

Re torqued the head this morning. Got about a quarter turn out of the head nuts, similar out of the allen head bolts and about an eighth out of the 4 barrel nuts. Re adjusted the valve clearances and all is good.

Just catching up on this thread now and the bike sure is coming along great, well done

Thanks Dave. Been out on it again today and really enjoying the ride. While I had it off the road, I did a lot of small refining jobs and the sum total of these has produced a really nice bike.

TSS update.

Now covered 400 miles since top end rebuild and very happy with result. Absolutely no oil leaks or crankcase blow by. The big win has been the copper head gasket rings. These are 0.5mm thicker than the compressed steel rings I removed. I chose to have the copper rings thicker to lower the compression. Where before the rebuild the compression test pressure was 152psi, it is down to 143 psi now. This has transformed the engine. It no longer "pings" at lower revs, it idles very reliably and as slow as I wish to set it and the engine has lost its harsh feeling. It pulls better at low revs, however has lost nothing higher up.

Worth the effort? You bet it was!
Nothing to do but enjoy the ride now! :y54:

Great to hear SD and putting that precious engine under less pressure is probably a good way give her a longer life...
