What I Did With My Bike Today

I spent much of yesterday replacing the stator gasket (leaking) and horn on my Trophy. The original horn sounded like it belonged on a child's tricycle. Because I was installing a 5A (Soundbomb Mini) horn to replace the 3A original, I had to wire in a relay and a direct hot lead to the battery, using the original horn wires as power to close the relay. Works great and surprisingly loud (in my garage). I'll get to test it as the deer become more active in my area.

Also, I was following a pickup at a safe distance down a country road last week. A driver (happened to be a woman, but no "shade" intended) was in a parking lot to my right, and she watched the truck go past, her left to right, and immediately started to pull out in front of me (PS. I was wearing a day-glo hi-vis jacket and my silver bike has dual LED headlamps). I hit the horn and moved away from her. I was lucky that her window was open, as she heard my anemic horn. That's when I decided to upgrade! I certainly can't make myself MORE visible!

The Post Office delivered a parcel today. TEC E-marked bar-end mirrors (larger glass and longer stems) plus TEC shallow bar-end finishers (much cheaper than the Triumph equivalents). Everything seems to be of high quality and the mirrors have a bit of weight to them.

I am expecting a pair of fir-trees (p/no T3450114) which research suggests are what Triumph uses to plug the original mirror holes.

A nice wee job for the weekend.

spent the day switching from stock 19 and 18-inch wire wheels back to 17-inch katana 750 cast wheels on my 1965 land speed machine. the last time i ran them the wheel bearings self-destructed and things got wobbly at speed.

there's still an issue with the bearings binding when the axle nut is fully tightened. i think its a spacer tube problem.

ive got two new ones coming in the mail, and if that doesnt solve the binding issue ill switch back to the wire wheels. id like to use them, though, as they lower the bike about four inches

I have installed the mirrors and bar end finishers. A really easy job. The new mirror reflectors are approximately the same size as the originals but as can be seen they sit further out and lower which gives a better field of view.

These TEC mirrors are modified for 2024 with an E-mark and longer stems to give more room when wearing bulky gloves. I could have bought smaller ones but I think they look good with the Dart flyscreen and the better vision is a big plus.

A couple days ago I went out to fire up the Speed Triple and take it off the battery tender. The bike started right up and idled nicely, but had a maintenance minder wrench on the dash. Hmmm. I cleared that off way back when. So I grab my Galaxy w/TuneECU and OBD reader and discover to my shagrin the battery in the Galaxy is dead. RATS!! I guess leaving it untethered from the wall for 4 months has a draining effect. Got it recharged to about 64% and then headed out to deal with the Speedy. Turned out there was a bad date in the minder queue, pushed 'fix' and all was well with the world, the wrench lamp went out. After putting the seat back on I took it for a spin around the block and yikes that bike has power to spare. Put a grin on this old man's face. Today on the agenda is installing wheel decals on the Speed Triple.

I prefer mirrors at the bar end as well. It does make the view wider.

If anyone has advice on keeping bars end mirrors tight I would appreciate it . And all my hex tools seem loose in the end cap , is this common?
My new ones came with a plastic shim strip in addition to the plastic adaptor. Using a short length of this allowed the fit to be tweaked giving a super tight installation. I used a 15mm length on one side and 5mm on the other. Maybe using something like this or a wrap or two of pvc tape on the bars where the mirrors mount would help.

The hex size on my T120 is 4mm, if yours is a sloppy fit the hex may be chewed up a bit.

Went riding with my son-in-law Tom (he rides a Speed Triple) for a two hour spin around the area on my Thruxton R. Saw some pretty cool cages out and about with the Spring temps. Lambo's, Porsche's, Vette's, etc. I actually raced a little bit with a guy in a 1960's C10 Hot Rod pickup. He gave me the thumbs up when he finally went past me. Tom was laughing in my ears the whole time (we have Sena intercom). I purchased some new riding trousers to alleviate the pressure on my knees and thighs from my blue jeans and they were spectacular. I bought them in hopes riding the Speed Triple RS would be more comfortable and I was right. The Thux's riding position is very close to the Speedy's so I'm ecstatic about the comfort provided. Great day for a ride, and got home recharged and relaxed.
