Broken pipes are no fun! Do you have a generator?
Unfortunately we live in a townhouse/row house with absolutely minimal outdoor space. There’s no location to install a generator and get the required minimum distances from the building. If there’s ever a device I can install safely I’d do it. It’s my only huge regret about this house.

A generator definitely has to be run in ventilated area, At my former house in Altamonte Springs, I could run mine under the garage overhang. Here in Fort Lauderdale at my new home, I can run it in the carport.

I have a five foot wide backyard and just a drive that sits on an easement. Can’t even put up a carport. LoL.

At some point I will be also moving into a townhouses complex. When I do this I am wanting to install a solar system more to get away from the current power situation in our country.

This would be more to keep everything up and running everyday when the power is switched off.

To move totally off the grid is still far more expensive than what I would want to put out.

Moving totally off the grid is more difficult and expensive than most people think. You must consider what you will do if you have extended cloudy or stormy weather, beyond a couple of days. Also, what will you do if a hurricane/tornado/earthquake/volcano (agreed, very unlikely) interrupts your ability to get fuel to your back-up generator for days or weeks?

Solar is not cheap either. The initial costs for the equipment and installation are expensive unless subsidized by taxpayers. I explored this when I lived in Central Florida.

The solar panels would have covered most of my roof. My roof was shingles and it was eight years old. A shingle roof in Florida lasts about 30 years at best. That means I would have had to have a new roof put on prior to the solar panels being installed. For longevity, I would have installed a metal roof. Metal roofs are more expensive than shingles but they last a lot longer. Even metal roofs require maintenance which is made difficult (read more expensive) by the solar panels. And the solar panels have a lifespan, too. Replacing solar panels is on the home owner and not subsidized.

I would have had to sign a 20 year contract with the company doing the installation. This contract would have made them my electric power provider. At the time I was looking at this, I was 75 years old. I told the sales rep that I didn’t have another 20 years. I learned this contract is like a lein. To sell my house, the buyer would have to assume this contract. I knew I was going to sell in the next 3 to 5 years.

Bottom line. If one is wealthy enough to outright purchase the equipment and pay for installation and wiring, the solar energy will save money. But here in Florida, one still needs a backup generator.

Nice post Carl. I'm in a similar situation because of my age and it's not worth getting into. I would never see the savings.
Our power rates are very reasonable so that was a factor too and little reason to change.
Ditto, my electric bill last month was only 46 USD. I was staying at the hospital with Ilse for part of that time. Normally the bill would be about 68 USD. In the peak of the summer, it gets into the 80's USD.

Today is overcast and temp is -7C / 19F with a slight fog this morning. Not looking forward to the coming week. Temps supposed to drop to -30C / -22F. I already know a few of my co-workers won't show up for work, leaving more work on the board for those of us that did show up.

-6C here on the east coast and sunny, but tomorrow we'll be getting some snow for about 18 hours into Monday. Probably 20-25 cm.
We never get brutal temps like you do in Edmonton.
I think I will take the cold over the amount of snow that the east can get. We could really use some snow here though. They are saying that 80% of farmland. does not have enough water to be able to grow mature crops next summer. After 23 years in my house, it looks like one end of the foundation is settling because the water table has dropped. Suddenly last week while sitting in the living room, two panels of dry wall just seperated right at the seam and it made a pop sound. If this becomes more of a problem, might have to get the foundation mud jacked.

Tomorrow is supposed to be 60F and sunny, so son-in-law Tom and I will get a ride in during the afternoon. I'll probably take the Bobber (tho I should test out the new chain on the Speed Triple) since I only have to unplug the battery tender to ride it.
