Dillagaf's thread about a flatscreen made me wonder about the differing TV formatting that's represented here on the board.

If anyone on the board ever wanted to mail another member a DVD...would it play on their DVD player or not? Everyone here would have one of the following:

  • [li]NTSC[/li]
    [li]PAL[/li]
    [li]SECAM[/li]

In North America the format is NTSC.

Looks like the Americans are riding on the wrong side of the road once again :y23: :y23:

Don't most modern players multi format these days?
[/quote]

That's true, but I'd check your player to be sure (and it wouldn't apply to video tape).

In a few months, all TV broadcasting in the USA will be digital, so everyone with analogue TVs will be screwed unless they get a converter.

Dave, do you watch the Playboy channel on pay TV? :y114:

We don’t have that one on our TV channels :y47: :y34: :y23:

Dave,

Are cable TV company employees just as annoying there in SA ?

I'll bet that is universal!!

I love when they tell you that someone will need to be there between the hours of 9:00AM - 8:00PM to let their guy in.

Or how when you call the recording always says they are "experiencing larger than normal call volume". You can call them at 3:00AM and it'll say that! Their definition of "normal" must differ from mine?

AJ we only have the one and it is satellite. The company splits its services. It has a part that is still analogue this gives you the M-net channel. Then the satellite is also split. If you take the satellite (DSTV) you get the M-net channel with it. Then you can get DTSV light where you can select between the channels sort of bunched together in different packages. Then they have channels that you cannot view here in SA and only sent out to some of the African countries. They then have the duel view that has is PVR decoder. This splits you DSTV so you are able to view two different channels and record one at the same time, this is what I have. Here is a link to the different channels that we get. http://www.dstv.com/main.aspx?Id=136

Of course then we have our State owned and run channels they are also incorporated into the DSTV channel list. These are SABC 1, SABC 2 & SABC 3 (also analogue) I don’t watch then very often. We then have an independent station (also analogue) e-TV, not bad but I also don’t watch it much. This one is also in the DSTV list.

New licences have just been awarded to new companies for pay TV I suppose this will be more like your cable TV as you know it. So once they come onboard we may see quite a shakeup as DSTV has had the monopoly for years on pay TV.

Dave, our cable companies, until very recently, have had monopolies via their franchises. A local government - county or city - will grant a franchise to XYZ cable company making them the only cable provider in that jurisdiction. In theory, the county or municipality looks out for the consumers best interest (we all know how that works!). Satellite TV changed the landscape by providing real competition with the the cable guys. Recently, the State of Florida granted AT&T (telephone provider) the right to offer cable via its telephone lines. In return, AT&T must up grade its lines and install upgraded switching equipment to make this this feature available to every subscriber. That same switching equipment also carries the ADSL. That ruling by the state is how I finally got ADSL when I lived on the preserve. It was a great ruling for the rural areas of Florida covered by AT&T. It does not affect areas covered by other phone service providers. Where I live now, I can choose Comcast cable or between two satellite TV providers - Dish and Direct. We have Dish both here and in North Carolina. Competition is good for the consumer.

Well I must admit I cannot complain about the content of our dish TV as you can see we get quite a variety of international shows. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the new companies maybe the prices may drop now this would be a bonus.

Yes we did manage to watch one or two of the Girls of Playboy thing but boy we were really desperate. I personally feel that those women are dumb and well you know ......... those types of women :y34:

Carl,

Around here we have a choice of Armstrong Cable or Comcast Cable. Both offer: cable TV, cable internet, and now telephone service.

In addition to that, Verizon telephone just began offering Fios (fibre-optic digital TV) in addition to it's normal telephone and DSL internet.

Then there is the Dish Network and Direct TV for people who like satellite.

Satellite isn't too popular around here because snow causes interference or complete drops of the signal in the Winter months.

Severe thunderstorms wash out the satellite signals here. But if you live anywhere but in a urban/suburban area, chances are satellite is your only choice - except now in AT&T serviced areas.

I'm seriously considering FIOS TV from Verizon since I already have Verizon for my telephone, cellphones, and DSL. If I get all of them from Verizon, the bundled package is much cheaper than what the others offer. I already had to pay for the telephone line to my house since it had no electric or telephone lines when I bought it (being an Amish farmhouse). At first I used satellite TV and Internet and only had cellphone for my telephone, but it was so expensive and the service so poor that it made sense to pay them to run the phone line (which is already fibre optic).
