HELLO GENTS. YESTERDAY I PURCHASED A 2015 TIGER 800 XRX WITH 32K ON IT. DURING A HOT START, THERE IS A SLIGHT ENGINE RATTLE FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS THEN IT QUITS.

WHAT IS THIS NOISE? THE SERVICES ARE ALL UP TO SNUFF.

ALSO, DON'T ALL XRX BIKES HAVE HEATED GRIPS? MINE DOESN'T.

I have a 2017 Tiger 800 XRX which I bought new. It didn't come with heated grips. I have fitted Oxford heated grips which involved modifying the throttle tube which is a bit thicker than standard due to pre- moulded groves for heating wires (I bought a used grip and filed it down).

The rattle might be due to the hydraulic chain tensioner being a bit slow. At that mileage it might be worth cleaning it internally and fitting a new spring. The tensioner blades and cam chain might also be worth a check. NOTE DO NOT turn the crank with the tensioner removed or the cam chain may jump and knock the valve timing out.

In addition to a new spring you will need a new gasket and o-ring for the tensioner and a gasket for the timing cover if checking the tensioner blades. There is a procedure to reset the tensioner which must be followed when refitting this is outlined in the workshop manual (Street Triple 675 manuals can be found online, the procedure is similar for them). NOTE the bike will sound like a bucket of nails when first started after replacing the tensioner until it ratchets to the correct position, don't rev until this subsides and switch off if it doesn't calm down after a second or so.

THANKS FOR THE INFO. I WILL TRY AND MAKE THE ADJUSTMENTS

THE BIKE CAME WITH A FULL LEO VINCE EXHAUST WHICH MEANS THE CAT IS OFF THE BIKE. IS IT WISE TO ALSO REMOVE THE EVAP CANISTER SINCE IT IS RATHER UNSIGHTLY AND CAN CLOG AND RESULT IN POOR HOT STARTS?

I HAVE BEEN RIDING MY TIGER FOR A MONTH NOW AND HAVE NOTICED THAT IT CONSUMES QUITE A BIT OF OIL. IM RUNNING CASTROL 10-50 SYNTHETIC AND I HAVE ALREADY ADDED A QUART AFTER RIDING A MERE 600 MILES.

IS THIS NORMAL FOR THIS BIKE AND IF I SWITCH TO FOSSIL OIL WILL THE CONSUMPTION BE LESS?

Mine runs on Castrol Power One synthetic and doesn't use any oil. My mileage is much lower though.

Shouldn't use that much oil. Doubt changing to dino oil would make a difference. Can try dropping to 10W40 oil. Temps cooling off now and thicker oil will take a bit longer to circulate to your cam tensioner and quiet down.

I WILL TRY THE 10-40 OIL AND SEE IF THERE'S ANY DIFFERENCE IN CONSUMPTION. I'M NOT BURNING ANY OILNOR DO I HAVE ANY LEAKS SO IT'S A MYSTERY TO ME AS TO WHERE IT COULD BE GOING.

SPEAKING OF MYSTERY, DOES ANYBODY USE MARVELS MYSTERY OIL IN THERE NEW BIKES?

I HAVE BEEN CHECKING MY OIL LEVEL BY PLACING THE BIKE ON ITS CENTER STAND. AFTER A FEW HUNDRED MILES OF RIDING, I DON'T SEE ANY OIL IN THE OIL LEVEL WINDOW.

DOES IT MEAN MY OIL IS LOW AGAIN OR DOES THE BIKE HAVE TO BE OFF THE CENTER STAND TO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL? ALSO, SHOULD I BE CHECKING IT WHEN BIKE IS HOT OR COLD?

Should be a cold check. On the center stand will tilt bike forward slightly and reading may be high. Try to stand it up from side stand to vertical, some one to assist in this is the best way to hold it while you read the sight glass.

THANKS QSHIP. I ADDED A 1/5 OF A QUART AND GOT IT BETWEEN THE MARKS ON THE SIGHT GLASS. AFTER A 160 MILE RIDE, SOME OF THE OIL APPEARED TO SEEP OUT OF THE OIL FILL CAP. IS THAT NORMAL?

THE RUBBER SEAL IS INTACT. IT DID THIS ONCE BEFORE WHEN THE OIL WAS BETWEEN THE LINES OF THE SIGHT GLASS YET IT DOESN'T DO IT WHEN NO OIL SHOWS IN THE SIGHT GLASS.

ALSO, COULD IT BE FROM EXTREME LEAN ANGLES AS I DO RIDE MOUNTAIN RODES ALOT?
