I agree Dave but they didn't ask me. All this political fighting is getting old and people are losing everything and some are dying while they fight it out.

The Magnolia Fire, located about 20 miles west of my home is reported to be between 50 and 80% contained, 5000 acres involved, 80 to 100 homes destroyed. We heard calls on the scanner yesterday from firefighters requesting LEO assistance, they had spotted possible arsonist in the area. Was not able to hear any reports of what the LEO's had found. LEO's were in pursuit at one time of looters, caught some of them but were looking for two others. In one case the looters left their truck and trailer in a driveway and ran toward the fire line and firefighters knocked them off their feet with streams from the fire hose and held them for LEO's. This was all on the scanners, no news report yet but I suspect the news is not reporting it at the request of the Fire Command, they don't want people worrying about their homes and trying to re-enter the fire zone which would then put firefighters in danger of having to enter unsafe areas to try and save the peoples lives.

The homeowners in the northern section of the Magnolia Fire are being allowed back in to check their property's. Fortunately most of the Montgomery and Harris County residents will find their homes still intact. Unfortunately many of the Waller County residents will not have the same good fortune, 75 to 80 homes in Waller County have been reported as destroyed.

Some of the latest photos, I can see and sometimes smell the smoke from thus fire.

The firefighters were requesting if anyone was planning to donate items to the firefighters, they needed Gatorade, 5 Hour Energy, Red Bull or other such drinks. Well Red Bull heard their request.

I'm still trying to get an update on the Bastrop Fire.

Bastrop Fire update

35000 acres not contained but the crews are making head way.

600 homes destroyed.

2 deaths, a young mother and her 18 month old child.

All but 100 acres of Bastrop State Park has burned, the historical section was saved.

It looks like the ranch we used to race on has been spared, the fire moved to the east of the ranch but they aren't out of the woods yet as there is a new fire burning to their northwest.

A new fire has also started in the Austin area, arson is suspected. Residents reported seeing four teenage boys running from the area where the fire started.

Tropical Storm Nate has formed in the western Gulf of Mexico. Current projected path has Nate moving into Mexico and bringing no rains to Texas due to the high pressure still parked over Texas.

This I don't understand, a professional firefighting service should have hydration, food, medical services and backup for rest times in place before the fire starts. I remember years ago when we had a very bad emergency close to home and non professionals were helping the backup was still first class, when fully stretched the Salvation Army do a fantastic job.

This is a rural area and 90% of the firefighters are volunteers and the departments run on a very tight budget. There are firefighters from all over the state and nation in the area many of which have been working 24 to 48 hours straight. The supplies they had would have been plenty for their normal duties but the influx of additional crews taxed their resources. The fire apparatus' from the other regions came with all the gear they could carry but the trucks were mostly loaded with fire and safety gear. The local departments have plenty water for hydration needs but with the shifts they are working is taxing the bodies of the firefighters.

The requests for Red Bull were also due to people showing up with cases of ice cold water which they had plenty of.

Back up crews are provided thru mutual aid agreements and requirements placed on departments with the pickup based booster trucks provided by state funds. Normally this would be enough to provide extra hands to allow more crew rest time but since Sunday there has been 172 active brush fires in Texas. This is spreading the available manpower very thin. Some of the volunteers are also paid firefighters in other districts and have to also cover their normal shifts forcing them to leave the volunteer departments again reducing manpower.

The Salvation Army, Red Cross and local service groups are providing a lot of assistance. The National Guard is also playing a large part but several guardsmen are also volunteer firefighters in their communities.

That sounds a lot better and understandable. Just that after reading the posts about the political situation with Federal and State not working together I got the idea the complete thing was a mess. Good luck with a bad situation.

Kevin, conflicts between the states and the feds is not unusual. In fact, unfortunately, it is the rule. I have seen it time and time again in hurricane cleanup and relief.

Don't get me wrong, we have Federal v State issues but I can't recall them being an issue in times of emergency.
I was going to post a couple of photos taken from home during one of out fires but won't hijack the thread.
Best of luck, give me a flood before a fire.

Texas is burning again, 14,000 acres and 300+ homes involved as of the latest report in Bastrop, 150 acres in Walker County and around 1,500 acres in Colorado County. T.S. Lee brought high winds to Texas and no rains causing all counties in Texas to have the fire hazard to be elevated to Extreme Fire Danger.

We currently have fires burning 25 miles north of our home in the Huntsville area, 50 miles southwest in Columbus and 80 miles west southwest in Bastrop and 100 miles west in Travis County. Multiple smaller fires have been popping up around us in Montgomery and Harris counties but fortunately they have been caught while still small. This could get interesting if we don't get some rain soon and the dry winds continue.

I'll up date this thread as more information is available.

Just seen it on the news again......its bad there. Hows things where you are now? Any changes? Stay safe!!!!!

The fires here (Magnolia Fire) has changed directions this morning, moving north northeast. We live east northeast of the fire. A new squadron of Blackhawks arrived last night and this morning to aid in water drops.
