Hello all.

Think this my 2nd post.

First post was my introduction to forum. That one explained my joining forum, as was just starting look at restore on 1995 Thunderbird 900. (or actually all boxes parts of one!)

Was out chasing parts for that one today

... well

Look what I brought home instead.

Now I have TWO Triumph projects. Proving once again, at least *I* do not get smarter with age.

This is one is a 1977 Bonneville 750.

Motor professionally rebuilt with 0 miles on it. Has a Boyd ignition was told. Box under seat area has that name too. And has "primary drive changed to a belt".

That & it was seller dad's last project. As his dad was in process restoring, he got sick & never was able finish.

Now it's mine to finish. As it's more complete, this becomes the active project.

Probably will ask **all** usual dumb questions. And knowing me, invent some brand new questions that rise to the idiot level.
At least I warned y'all.

Thanks in advance for everyone's patience & understanding. Best wishes.

Welcome!

I've still got a couple of classic Triumphs, and a freshly renewed registration '00 Legend which is a similar triple.

You know, I can't recall ever reading a 'dumb' question on this forum; a brand new one, possibly (like what's this black metal plate welded to the rear loop?)

I'm up here northwest of Austin, so not dreadfully far should something earth-shattering come up...

...also former Navy ASE2...

Well met. Appreciate welcome.

We'll see about that 'dumb question' issue, when I do actually get started. (grin) Just got '77 750 unload today.

Then got called into work. Semi-retired. Only officially scheduled 1 day a week, Sat. Theatrically, have lots time ride and/or work on bikes now. Seems USPS has other plans for me though. ☹️

Not too far at all. My brother lived in Georgetown for decades. Used to drive down often until he passed.

Was ETN2 about 40 something years ago. Served on USS Henry B Wilson, DDG-7.

I need help, I'll certainly ask fellow sailor.

Thanks. And best wishes!

Ok, first of many (dumb?) questions. Do I continue my "saga" in this thread? Or ask about specific issues in new threads?

You see, been wondering about this primary belt drive. Have zero experience with them. Specifically, the cover. Mine has series of holes drilled into it.

Certain it has to do with cool. Either as way help keep temp inside down (due to belt), or that someone thought it looked cool.

Why do I care? Live on dirt road, cliche dust horrible here.

If holes done as cooling measure, what would be worse for a belt drive? Hgher temps or grinding talcum like dust?

Wondering minds ( ok, mine) wants to know. (grin)

Thanks to anyone that knows & willing to share!

I can't help you, but it would probably be better to post this in the classics section where the classics monitors are more likely to see it.
I hope you get an answer.

some belt drives run dry and have a recommendation to ventilate. bob newby recommwnds leaving the trapdoor cover off behind the clutch on his.

certainly grit is always an issue, even with final drive chains. but i live on dirt and gravel three miles from the pavement and have not yet had an issue with the belt final drive on my 97 buell. i run newbys on the track with open primaries nut thats clean pavement.

I have a '78, which is reeel similar to yours, (except for those alterations that I see). Having a new engine is a reeel good thing, too! That is most of the battle right there. There are a passel of riders here that can answer . . . and love to answer . . . all of your dumb and idiotic questions.

Hello. Was seduced into project by the rebuilt engine. Figured rest should go easy. (I know, but can hope! LOL) And you are correct, folks here seem very helpful already. As you have similar bike, sure you'll be able answer many of my questions. And thanks in advance.

Best wishes.

Welcome to the group!
The machine you brought home seems to have good bones, just needs a little time and effort. This past spring I had just finished my ‘76 T140 build from ground up. Quite a fun project. Lots of good knowledge and ideas here from all over. There is no dumb question asked here the most knowledgeable folks here started by asking questions. Again welcome to the clan!

Thanks, appreciate welcome.

Be awhile before my project is anywhere near as nice as how yours turned out. Best wishes.
