An internet acquaintance in New England had the misfortune to have a tree blow over in a wind storm and crush his garage.
Inside was a car and two motorcycle. The car only suffered very minor damage and the bikes escaped completely unhurt.
If the tree had fallen on the other end of the roof the result may have been a lot different.
This is the result after the tree had been removed.

I had two very large maple trees in my yard that could easily hit my house, garage and either neighbour.
After hurricane Juan passed over us in 2003 both trees survived, but I lived in fear of other storms as the trees grew larger so a couple of years ago I had them taken down.
It was painful to see those beautiful trees being destroyed but it had to be done. The risk was just "growing" greater every year BGRIN

The only real bad weather we have is heavy wind at times. I the older part of the city they also have these huge trees and often we see one of them coming down during strong winds. It is astounding at what a bit of wind can do to these huge trees that seem to have been around forever, so I can just imagine what a hurricane would do.

It's September and October that we have to worry about the tail ends of hurricanes and those big maple trees still had their full growth of leaves. The leaf growth was so thick it was almost like a solid wall and heavy winds can't blow through.
Watching them bend in a high wind was gut wrenching so the decision was made to take them down.
They were beautiful and wonderful shade for the house in the summer time, but the time had come.
It was a two-fold result; no more threat and suddenly a huge amount of light now brightens up the house.
I guess you can't have everything - or things both ways BGRIN

I have big trees around my property as well. Mostly Pine and Hemlock.
Had one come down during Hurricane Arthur and destoyed a portable garage and damage another.
Both cars survived with only minor damage to one.
That was a treat to come home to as we were away on vacation about 2000 kms away.

That was the fear I had for many years after Juan blew through and toppled thousands of trees around the city and area.
Whenever I was away on a trip thousands of km's away, in the back of my mind was the worry about a rogue storm and what it might do.
