Sprocket Changes For More Acceleration

Hey guys,

Im wanting to change the sprockets on my Scrambler 900, Looking to get more acceleration out of it for city and back road riding. I know it comes at a cost for the speed but you don't get a scrambler to do highways

Any recommendations ?

I have had a similar thought for my 67 Bonneville. First gear is quite tall so not super quick from a stand still with a little bit of clutch slip required. I ask the same question as Adam. Anyone tried it? I rarely do much over 100kmph as I don't like to push the old thing too hard plus I try to stay under 5000 rpm.

changing the front one tooth smaller is cheapest but stresses the chain a bit more + depending on your chains condition a kit from the sprocket center is an option. on my T120 i got a kit using a lighter but strong EK 520 chain with an eze screw link, stock 17 front going from 37 to 41 on the rear centered the axle + stock size 100 link chain worked. do you have a WC street scram or the air cooler, my19 WC street scram is geared low, your choice for sure

Thanks for the swift reply. I think standard I have a 20 tooth front sprocket and from memory they did fit a 19 for sidecar use. I have just bought two heavy duty chains which certainly look a lot stronger. Not o ring type so they still fit without a problem. I normally only ride 500km before swapping the chain over to a clean one. Two chains are an absolute must coz threading the chain onto the front sprocket is no ones idea of fun. Just use one chain to pull through the replacement. I occasionally forget and its not nice. For cleaning I wash the chain in fuel, scrub, then leave sitting in a bath of engine oil until required. I then hang it up to drain for a couple of hours before use and spray liberally with chain spray, let it dry, then fit it. Probably overkill but it makes me feel good. I also change the engine oil every 1200 km's which is more than twice that recommended by Triumph. Apologies, yet again I stray from the original post. Oh well, its all good fun. Why else would we care for these high maintenance motorcycles.

whatever works for YOU. my replacement chain on my 18 T120 was a X ring said to have less friction + being a 520 its lighter as well but as strong or stronger than OE 525. my 19 street scram will see sidecar duty soon hopefully + will see how the OE 520 holds up!
