Started when I was in the army, 19. I quit for 11 months when I was around 27/28 but my wife asked me to please start again. I used to have a very bad temper and it was working out expen$ive.

Still smoke a pack a day.

...

Same here...the couple of times I attempted to quit, my family said I was unbearable to live with!

BTW.....I once tried the hypnosis thing, paid $50 and laughed through the attempt to hypnotize me! I also found out you can where 2 of those nicotine patches and get a good buzz smoking at the same time!

I tried plastic smokes and hypnosis to quit both without success.
I found I was still craving, therefore the treatment didnt work so I could start again.
In the end I found if you got to genuinely wanting to quit, then just go it alone. Then when you feel yourself weakening, you cant blame it on something other than your self and this helps your determination.
Then I found, once I had been off them for a couple of weeks, if I went back then, I had just gone through two weeks of hell for nothing, and I would still have to go through it all again, so I didnt.
Bin 5 years now,f--k I could use a smoke.:y6:

I had my first drag on a fag aged 9, regular smoker from about 14. By my mid 20's I smoked 2 packs a day until I quit in 1996 aged 35. It was really hard to quit, especially when I went to the pub. As soon as I had had a couple of pints I would weaken and buy some cigs. The drink was also getting out of hand, so I gave up both at the same time!
16yrs now without a drink or a smoke, and I can honestly say, I do not miss either! Sad I know!

After high school I went to work in food service. Smokers got breaks. Non-smokers did not get breaks.
I started smoking. Got up to 3 packs a day. Switched to cigars. They were easier to come by in Germany as the commissary and base exchange were always low on my brand of cigarettes. Hav-a-tampa jewel cigars with a wooden tip.
(that fear of mouth cancer) Smoked 8 or 10 a day.
Got back to the states and went back to cigarettes. I would wake up coughing and immediately reach for a cigarette.:y21:

Tried "smokeless tobacco" for a while but spilled my spit can in my lap swerving the car in traffic.....
Cleaning up that mess put me back to cigarettes......

Had two kids by then and decided that smoking was a really bad idea. I put a pack in my pocket and chose not to smoke.
I figured that if I had them but chose not to smoke then I really was quitting.
After about 4 weeks (apparently I was a bear to be around) my wife suggested that I just "taper off".

I went to the "Library" in our home and lit up. A long hard pull on the cigarette and I nearly passed out.
That was the last time. It was 1976.

I took the money I had been spending on cigarettes and bought our first microwave oven at Sears & Roebuck.

BTW: I was spending $2.30 a carton for cigarettes in the commissary. At 3 packs a day, I had $25.00 a month to spend on that microwave. My lungs are clear now but I weigh 300 lbs......... (136kg) (21 stones) (too damned much)
