Dave Simmer went down yesterday. Thankfully he was not seriously hurt. He sent me the following email:

I screwed up and went down on my bike yesterday. I hurt my right
shoulder. Nothing broke, but am one sore puppy this morning. I
don't have a way to post this drawing of what happened, so thought
maybe you could. I think it is important to look closely at
accidents and see what went wrong. This may help someone else.

Heal quickly, Dave.

I have gone down twice because of too much front brake. That was back in the 70's when I started riding a "modern" bike with disc brakes as opposed to my old shoe brake bikes. On those I rarely used the front brake anyway. Harry is right; it is an easy mistake to make in a panic stop.

Thanks everybody. I feel sooooooo stupid and sore. The doc says I may have a hairline crack in my clav and tore some muscles, but will get better with the sling. I have one quarter size ding in my tank, broke right forward peg, and bent rear brake lever. I have seen the "Ride Like a Pro" video many times, but did not follow through in this situation. In places like that I should have had foot on rear brake through that mess. I will avoid that place and use another from now on.

Dave, sorry about your crash, Hope the shoulder heals quickly. I did something similar last month following a garbage truck and assumed it would do one thing and he stopped instead and I did a unnecessary panic grab on the front brake in a fairly straight line and the bars twisted right and the front tire skid i went down to the left, helmet and face shield hit first then my shoulder and I rolled and was on my feet almost immediately. the ankle hurt immediately but nothing else hurt until the next morning. I'm guessing that too much right hand and not enough foot was my downfall and possibly debris in the road to cause the turn of the wheel for me.
Ensure your front tire is not cupped. I feel uneven traction from the right and left sides of center will cause one side of the tire to grab harder.

Here is the solution everyone.

When you are in traffic keep the front brake covered with two fingers. Then if you need to brake quickly you don't GRAB for the brake and lock the front up.

Good advice Dill. I do that on both the clutch and brake, but I guess I still locked it up or I may have just grabbed with whole hand. I was in a right turn, the speed wasn't that much and I used no rear brake at all. Just plain stupid. When I get back on her I will have to practice in a parking lot so that it will be second nature to me.

Sounds like the no back brake was the problem.

Dave ,
Hope slow dump has no lasting
long term effects !

I'm not traffic expert , but if diagram is accurate
looks like everybody is running a muck

The 2 finger rule sounds good but remember this, the pinky and the ring finger are the strongest fingers on your hand due to the tendons running straight down your arm directly to those 2 digits.

Wayne you are right about it being a bad intersection. There are lights only out on the highway. I will be avoiding that one in the future, even in the cage. In Washington State the law allows transit buses the right of way when re-entering traffic and do they take advantage of it. You really have to watch them.
