If Berryman's doesn't clean the jets thoroughly, they have a foreign object blocking them.

I use the wire strand ONLY to clear foreign objects without scraping the soft brass of the jet. MAIN jets typically do not clog in this manner, they GUM UP with compounds left by evaporating modern fuel.

If you do indeed clear a bit of grit, re-dip the jet for another 20 minutes or so, it will come out as new, clean as a whistle.

I have done just about all I know that I can do....There is a Triumph dealer about an hour and a half from me. I am just gonna bite the bullet and have them do the work. Hopefully they can get me an old owners manual or the modern equivalent. This bike means too much to me for me to go plundering around and mess up and REALLY have to pay some money to get it fixed. I do appreciate all the advice given. Btw, I was able to download the file for the repair manual.....only problem was the pages that were missing were the ones on the carbs :/ go figure. Y'all have a great day and I will let you know the prognosis and the outcome of my repairs and hopefully ( fingers crossed ) I will be riding soon.

It's unlikely that one of today's "Triumph Dealers" know how to work on a 78 Bonneville properly. Old and New Triumphs were deliberately separated by the new company. Find a shop that works on classic bikes, ignore the word Triumph on a shop window.

Perhaps the Triumph dealer you spoke of would give you some names of places that work on classic Brit bikes?

I did a quick search in Alabama and found this place:

  • Skinner’s M/C Sales & Service
  • 488 Opelika Rd., Auburn, AL. 36830
  • Phone/Fax 334-821-2535
  • Buy-Sell-Trade BSA & Triumph bikes & parts Ship UPS – Master Card/Visa

Perhaps you are closer to another place in an adjacent State such as Florida????

Here's a place in Tallahassee, FL:

Seek out the local classic bike riders, they should direct you to people with old bike skill.
That was going to be my suggestion.
Try and find out if there is a "bike night" or similar in your area where bikers gather. You might meet classic bike riders there and make a contact.
Ask at bike shops and check their notice boards for info on a club or anyone or group who ride classic bikes and question them about mechanics or skilled persons.

Glad to hear it TUP

Just to play devil's advocate I will chime in that my local Triumph dealer also works on classics. Talking with the owner, he became a dealer b/c he loved Triumph and owned some vintage bikes. With that said, I still don't take my bike to him b/c they charge dealership prices, just like I don't take my truck to the Dodge dealership for service. For problems out of my league I found a local mechanic who has been working on classic Triumphs since they were new and he charges much more reasonably than the dealership.

My modern Triumph was bought by a guy that had sold Triumphs back in the 1960s, lost his franchise when Triumph went under, wrenched on classics for years until he got the new Triumph dealership.

In their infinite wisdom they took away his franchise saying that selling only 35 bikes a year was too few.

He's now back to wrenching on classics....Triumph treated him like dirt.

Now...... the Triumph dealer nearest to me also sells Aprillia, BMW, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, and Vespas. No one in their shop would have a clue about working on a classic. In fact if you go there wanting to buy a Triumph, they will do everything in their power to talk you into a BMW instead.

My Triumph dealer sells Triumph, BMW & Yamaha. He won't work on any bike regardless of brand that's over 15 years old. When one tries to purchase a new Triumph he gives the sales pitch for BMW and if that fails he'll sell a Triumph. I've purchased 3 new Triumphs in a 3 year period out of town despite the fact that he's only 10 minutes away from me. The dealer that's one and a half hours away delivers new bikes to me in a covered van and usually has 2 or 3 others on board for delivery.

Took my bike to Countryside Cycle today. The owner Jon Berglund is on his "A" game. He had ALL the parts I needed right there in his shop. I am switching handle bars and making some other changes. He is going to thoroughly inspect the bike ie: check and correct the timing (if needed), check the carbs, check the brakes, clutch, etc. He told me that the bike still had the original tires on it. He was VERY informative. When I go to pick it up he is going to tell me all the ins and outs on the bike that I need to know to become a classic owner. At this moment in time I feel as if I made the right choice.........now lets see what I have to say when I get the bill. :/

If the guy knows his product and can do the job right, no matter what his charge out rate, you will pay less than some cheap spanner man who doesn't have a clue
