Do you celebrate it in USA? Any states?

Yes, it is great, you can be outside as long as you want ... it will not get too dark at all. Plus Finland shows its the best sides (nature).
Not really. Only at our house, drink a bit, eat and just have fun. It’s not something that gets noticed aside from the weather reporter mentioning the longest day and so on. For people from Nordic countries here, it’s a reason to party. I’m not even sure how many EU countries celebrate it. It’s all down hill as far as days are after midsummer. LoL. Enjoy and party!

Midsummer is a bit of a misnomer. In Finnish the event is Juhannus and it marks the date of the summer solstice, the beginning of summer and ends with the fall equinox. So @Vector you are correct that it is actually the beginning of summer. I don’t know how it ever became known as midsummer, perhaps Shakespeare. Who knows.

Well, as the day time starts to shorter after Midsummer, and via that we'll start to move (unavoidably) against Autumn and Winter little by little .... I like to call it Midsummer. It is the change point. Would be weird to call it beginning of Summer.

Why Summer would be between the summer solstice, and the fall equinox? Equally well summer could then be between the spring equinox and the summer solstice? But it is not either then. Australia etc. (Down Under) is another case....

I think it boils down to convention. Agree, I never think of the solstice as the beginning of summer. As you know, but some here wouldn’t, the month of June in Finnish is Kesäkuu which translates to “Summer month”. So internally for me the beginning of summer is always the first day of June / KesäKuu.

Interesting conversation.
It just shows you how different cultures handle the same subject differently.
Here in Canada, we handle the solstice the same way as the US.
It is indeed interesting. I do like the idea of solstice celebrations as well as ones for the equinox. Who doesn’t like to celebrate four times a year!

I guess Atlantic Ocean is big enough of sea. Humans are different; different side of it. Canada is opposite closely connected to USA.

Well, our Summer will start beginning of June (3 weeks ago) but it also will end already beginning of August or middle of August. Being short. The climate change or global warming has not influenced on that. Opposite our winters have became warmer and shorter and autumn and spring seasons have become longer (if we think about climate).

Looks like you have not forgotten all (Finnish). Are you able to read & understand Kalevala :giggle:? Kesäkuu (June) is Juni in Swedish. Pretty close? Maybe Vikings (spoking old Norsk language ... a old common language to whole area of Scandinavia and Iceland) and Scots/Irish/Brits have been able to communicate someway in history?

Not many. It is a big thing in Sweden and in Finland. It is important in Norway. Already smaller thing in Denmark. The rest of Europe? In my understandings only Baltics (southern side of Baltic sea) will celebrate it. Latvians and Estonians at least, not sure about Lithuanians.

My parents had a Finnish Kalevala, I’m not sure where it ended up. As a kid, I read some of it, but didn’t finish it . LoL. I think I could do better now and understand it as well better. My wife is Finnish, I met her when I went to Finland after my university studies. So we do speak Finnish at home and she even got me to read some. I worked in Finland for nearly ten years so I did pickup a lot better understanding than I had as a kid. It’s a shame the old book was lost by my parents. Can’t ask them now, they are beyond asking. LoL. I might see about finding a copy. It really is something I was always fascinated by. Hyvää Juhannusta!
