If I'm honest I like both, I like riding with other people as long as I know that the're aren't total tossers. At the Triday event this year in Austria, group ride outs were organized and to my amazement everyone one on these ride outs stayed in their starting position all day. It made for a very pleasant days riding around the Austrian mountains. There were no hero's that wanted to show you how fast he or she can go, just a group of riders who were there for the simple enjoyment of the fantastic Austrian and German scenery.
The downside to the group ride out comes when you want to stop for the photo's, or take a leak, that's the part that when you feel that your inconveniencing everyone else, and that's when I'd sooner be on my own
Sorry GRRR8, about the loss of your friend, that really is terrible.

I've done lots of riding with one other rider, quite a lot in small groups (3,4 or 5 riders) and a few big rides with 20-30 bikes. When I'm on a group ride I make sure I know what the route is and I ride at the back or even off the back of the group. If I don't like the pace or the type of riding going on I have no hesitation in splitting away from a big group.

I've also done plenty of solo riding, here and in neighbouring countries, both on-road and off-road. That's probably not the sensible thing to do in Africa, but I've had no problems up to now (fingers crossed, touch wood).

I agree with MOT.
I like both, but am an avid photographer and like to stop often to take pics.
If I'm with a group, or even with another rider or two, they don't often share my hobby and I have to ride on by.
Stopping often annoys those not into photography. That's when I enjoy riding alone at a slow pace or a fast one.
I'm not one who needs people around when I stop and I don't feel the least bit lonely. I love the solitude.

I do enjoy riding with a few other folks but I am so spur-of-the-moment when and where I ride I end up being solo most the time. Also, not many others can put up with my wanting to stop to get a photo so often, but I am a believer in "stopping to smell the roses" and getting a picture of them too.

That's the way I think too TUP TUP
