Love Iced Tea and I make my own - special little recipe from a chef friend! Luverly stuff! Iced Coffee once in a while - not a big coffee drinker - one cup a day is about it for me. As far as hot tea goes, I prefer a Ceylon tea, Darjeeling (with milk), Chinese green, jasmine or almond tea and Earl Grey, no milk. I like a slice of lemon with a bit of honey in the Earl Grey but no never, never milk.

What's the big deal about milk in a "bag"? We've had 'sachets' of milk for ages - it's a few cents cheaper than the cartons or bottles. But we call them 'sachets' because we're posh in South Africa!:y2:

Iced coffee? That's do wrong on many levels. Hot tea? See my coffee comment. :y2:

I've got to admit, I'm breaking the law of the South, I drink my tea straight (no sugar) and Texas Pecan Coffee sweet, Community Coffee (Louisiana coffee) straight. Around here you don't order Ice Tea, just Tea since there is only one proper way to serve it.

Green Tea can be either hot or ice cold, I like it both ways.

What's with you guys? I'm the only "mom" here and I've never even heard of her show let alone watched it. Anyway, Carl has the best friend green tomato recipe! I just love those things.

Love those fried green tomatoes. That is one of my specialties.



Let's be SPECIFIC here and say that the cooking talked about in this thread is SOUTHERN American cooking and not ALL of the USA cook that way or cook those things.

Ocra for example is something you won't find served in the North.

Ocra is properly spelled okra. :y2: I love it pan fried in a cast iron skillet - not deep fried like you get in restaurants. I also love it boiled and pickled.



When I was in the states for my bike Trip down the coast I remember being shocked to get biscuits with this whitish gloppy gravy along with my breakfast. Gravy for breakfast seemed so wrong....but I ate it...and enjoyed it....and probably gained 10 pounds just from looking at it haha. Definitely not something I would want more than like once a year. One thing I always forget is that in the states you guys have a different version of iced tea....in Canada Iced tea is this sweet stuff made from a powdered sugary mix that tastes nothing like actual tea and is basically pure sugar...and it is delicious....but you go to the states and ask for iced tea and you literally get a glass of cold tea (which I hate lol). I usually make that mistake once or twice before I remember not to order it again haha.

That gravy is an American tradition. Love sausage gravy, sawmill gravy or red eye gravy on biscuits. I grew up on southern and Native American cooking.
 
Carl, you need to post your Fried Green Tomato recipe - it's a real winner! It's the corn meal/flour that does it!

My tomato crop is looking sooooo good at the moment! Waiting for them to be just right and they're getting fried!
 
Glad you have got a good crop coming. This thread has made me hungry for fried green tomatoes. I will have to fry up a batch this weekend. The recipe is not exact. I just add things until it feels right.

Fried Green Tomatoes

Green tomatoes. They need to be firm.
Cornmeal
Flour
Eggs
Salt
Black Pepper


Prepare the batter. Break two or three eggs in a bowl - depending on how much batter you need. Add three parts cornmeal and two parts flour to the bowl. Add water until you get a good paste that will stick to the slices. Add a touch of salt and a generous portion of pepper. Mix thoroughly. You can use more or less cornmeal depending on your taste. The cornmeal gives a good flavor.

Slice the tomatoes and put the slices in the batter.

Pour about 1/2 inch of peanut oil into a cast iron skillet and heat the skillet on medium high. Drop the breaded slices into the skillet. Fry the slices until both sides are golden brown.
