Hello. I am going to refit the rear wheel to the motorcycle after putting on a new tire. I am not clear as whether the po had missed anything before I bought the bike, and I cannot see a clear order of things in the manual. From the left side the axle enters spacer with adjusting bracket. Goes through spacer and bearing to the other side where it goes through the bearing, then longer spacer, the speedo drive fitted and out through brake bracket. I just want to make sure something is not missing. I enclose a pic of the wheel, and speedo drive, and a large spindle washer, stainless that I do not have. Am I missing anything? Or am I good to go with cleaning, greasing and assembly. I just cannot seem to attach a picture of the stainless spindle washer. Thankyou, Robin

I may have found the answer. Was able to view a wheel bearing replacement video and saw that if a washer is applicable to my model, it would be outboard of the speedo drive, and sit in a slightly recessed area of same. Robin.

No "if".

Disc brake rear wheel first fitted to 76 twins, first parts book issued in February 1976 had so many mistakes - including missing the washer between the speedo gearbox and the chain adjuster - a complete new book was issued in August 1976, that shows/list the washer (a thick one), applies to all disc rear wheels.

Further confusion arises because the workshop manual was issued with the same incorrect rear disc wheel drawing as the February 1976 parts book but the workshop manual drawing was never subsequently corrected. (n)

All original speedo gearboxes have the recessed area cast into them, nothing to do with whether or not a washer was fitted against them.

Thanks for that Rudie. You are correct. No washer in the diagrams I found. Although not the stock stainless one, I used a washer that was very close and then fitted the wheel, which is now nicely centered. Robin V.
