Must be one of those infamous "thing-a-ma-jigs", or maybe a "doodad".
Seriously though, the more electronics you use, the more relays and sensors you are going to have. AKA: more potential problems. Remember when they started using computers and electronic controls on cars back in the late 70s and early 80s? That was a good time to have an OLD car!

I still like the old! But overall, electrical component maintenance is not nearly as frequent as it was in the days of points and condensers. But it was sure simpler to troubleshoot.

Points and condenser are throw away consumables, just like spark plugs, tires, wiper blades, etc.....
The other components "should" last the life of a vehicle, save relays, solenoids, or other things that have moving parts. Those parts are subject to wear and vibration. They are non-serviceable (you don't lube or adjust them) so they have a more finite life span. Heck, in the old days you could pull a relay apart, clean the contacts, and adjust the gap just like ignition points. Now they are usually sealed in black plastic boxes with epoxy resin. Some relays are totally electronic so they have no moving parts to adjust, even if you could get into them.

"Changeover relay"? That's a new one to me too. I suspect it may fall into the same category as what doctors call "stress"if they don't know what's wrong with you but feel the need to prescribe something. Still think it sounds like a loose connection, probably at the starter motor.

I've been sick of it everyday for the last 25+ years.

My blimey bike is finally fixed! :y115: (Like that Steve?)

So she's back in working order, and I'll remain optimistic that things are going to remain good. Thanks everyone for your participation and encouragement!

Brad

(Carl & Steve, looking forward to that meeting over cricket, fish and chips, and a tall frosty glass of :y18:)
