If your plate is not a personalized one it will remain with the vehicle this side. Getting a personalized plate does not come cheap and you have to wait forever for them to do it as well

Years ago, plates remained with the vehicles in a lot of states in the US. Each state has its owns rules for registration and plates to include customized or vanity plates, as we call them here.

Same here, Carl. Each province has its own rules.
In this province no plate but a government provided plate is allowed. We now own the plate and can keep it forever - transferring it to new vehicles over the years. That applies to all highway vehicles.
Antique cars are allowed a special plate denoting their antique status. Old motorcycles don't have antique plates - so far.
Our club has been hounding the government for several years to allow the same status for antique motorcycles as the cars have, but they keep dragging their heels.
We have vanity plates for cars and bikes now too.

In NC the magic number is 35 years. You can display a tag of the year your bike, car, or truck was made as long as you have the new required tag in the vehicle to be presented to the officer when you are stopped for any reason. I have one for my '53 Chevy Truck. I also had to buy a special frame because the '53 tag is different in size from the new ones. I had to hunt to find this frame because they don't sell them in the auto parts stores. A guy in the NC mountains sells them. A friend of his in TN makes them. They are milled polished aluminum. Very nice looking frame.

The magic number in Florida is 20 years for an antique tag or YOM (owners choice). At 35 years, one can purchase a Horseless Carriage tag. This is a one time purchase and it is permanent. Antique tags and YOM must be renewed bi-annually.

I have a personalized tag which says 79 T140. Thge dang thing costs me an extra $30 a year (total of $48). I am seriously thinking about getting a regular $18 tag and purchasing an original '79 tag to display on the bike. I will have to wait a few more years to get the 35 years in, but at that point as long as I have the regular tag somewhere on or in in the bike i can display the '79 tag. $48 is rediculous.
