Back in the 60's my grandmother planted a lot of trees on our block and on the adjoining reserve behind the fence, these included a number of cabbage tree palms.
Move forward, 30th July 1971 my wife and I were married and some photos (by chance) were taken next to one of them (grandma did see this).

Now 43 years later this is the same tree, I had to move way back to get it into shot.

Same tree on the left with some of it's friends taken from the reserve side.
That fence is 6' high.

I know many including Carl and my wife actually dislike the humble cabbage palm but grandma and I are winning this fight. Just too bad grandma isn't about to do a victory lap.SAD
Over the last couple of years I've planted about 20 more :y2: . Maybe in about 40 years from now my grand kids will be saying, "See that tree ........... :y15:".

I like them but they have to be planted in the right space because they get so tall. This is a problem as when the small you may not think about it and have to remove them later

I've got one (about 3 mtr tall) that's growing up and spreading out under my car-port.
Don't tell my wife but I'm going to cut the car-port back to give the palm room to keep climbing to the sky. You can doctor a car-port in half a day, it takes years to get a tree that high.

Ye you go for it kev ! I have a beach tree just out side the back door which is huge ! My house is actually under it , but if you manage them right they stay good and strong and save you from the some of the harsh Scottish winters we have here.
They give you nice shade in the summer too and as my wife will tell you ideal for the washing line to go under in the breeze.

I have a similar situation here.
Maple trees that were mere sprouts 50 years ago are now a threat if a hurricane passed over.
They could fall on my house or two of my neighbours. One tree could hit both of us and I'm seriously thinking of having them taken down.
50 years ago southern storms weren't much of a threat, but times have changed.
Tropical storm Arthur hit us last weekend and I was holding my breath as I watched the trees bend in the wind gusts.

Rocky have crown reduction done on them to relive the threat of them falling over , then you can still keep them and it would be less mess than taking them down completely .
