I hope anyone here who is in the southern US states made it through the storm OK.
It's on its way up the Atlantic coast and is expected to be here tonight.
It's -15C(4F) here this morning, but this time tomorrow it's expected to be above freezing here along the coast as warm air is sucked up from down Florida way. That means we will get wind and rain and probably some flooding as the water will have nowhere to go with so much hard snow on the ground. Inland and to the north the temps will be colder and they will get snow. Snow removal budgets for most towns and cities have already been spent and we still have six weeks to go.
Oh well, I have nowhere to go so I'll just ride it out.
This has been a brutal winter this year with storm after storm. It's become a local joke that, "If it's Wednesday then another storm is expected." But this one will be Thursday into Friday - not that that helps any :y2:

were having the worst winter on record and have just come through a 108 mph storm last night , we've had about 18 in a row now and has been going on since Christmas eve.
vast exspances of the uk are under anything from 2ft to 20ft of water and have been for months , there are thousands with out electric and any utilities and thousands of homes under water .
most western coast defences are breached or destroyed by the huge high tides we've had this year , and the storms keep coming !!!!! SAD WHEN WILL IT END !!!!!

Definitely tired of winter,....seems like winter lasts forever. Currently in Buffalo, New York, they have had over 100 inches of snow this season. .. at this point, riding season will not arrive soon enough!!!

An ignorant question, coming from South Africa, we live in sunny skys 365 days of the year and rarely
see snow.

So when these sever storms hit do you become house bound? umm power outages?
Do you ran on gas or boiler type central heating?
Might seem like very blond questions but I have not a clue about your weather

most people have been evacuated or as you say are house bound , although its starting to get hard to find some were to evacuate too .
heating is ...gas ,or electric or oil or solid fuel but nether are any good when the house is under water SAD

It looks like we got lucky again. When I got up this morning it was quite calm and the storm appears to have passed more to the north giving us only light wind and light rain overnight.
More to the north they got a lot of snow. I don't wish ill will on anyone, but I'm glad it's them and not us :y2:
This time yesterday morning it was -16C. This morning it's +8C, but will soon fall back to freezing with another less serious storm front coming in less than 24 hours.

Stay safe blokes and hope the stormy weather passes quickly. We have been having a heat wave however it was much cooler today around 27c but still keep missing the rain with the cooler weather it keeps heading toward Sydney further north. We hope to get some rain tomorrow which the birds and garden will appreciate

Things are getting back toward normal around here. The forecast hasn't been this high for the past three weeks.

Man that's cruel to show us Brits things like this.:y47: The only difference for us between winter or summer is the rains warmer. But all joking aside, the weather here is, ( as has been said here ) been terrible. Peoples homes have been destroyed and they've had little help in some areas for up to 6 weeks. I can't imagine what these people are going through. Here in Lincolnshire it's not been too bad ( Touch wood ). What gets my back up is that when there's a disaster in another part of the world, all the celebrities come out of the wood work to tell us to send money to whatever agency needs it. To date no celebrities have been on TV asking to send money to help these people in our own country. It's been said that the flooding could take months to drain away.

To help answer your question.....
In the USA & Canada, the Southern States rarely see this type of cold, snow, or ice. They lack the infrastructure to handle only short and small amounts when it does come. Further north and into Canada houses and the infrastructure see it every winter so they handle all but the very worst easily. They aren't paralyzed by it and things function normally.

When you have never driven in snow and ice only perhaps once before it's rough going. Plus, there is hardly any road equipment to keep the roads passable. With no one able to drive, supplies, food, and people to open the stores, they are in trouble.

Yesterday we actually had the temperature rise to a couple degrees above freezing for the first time since October!

Now all that melting snow and ice has to go somewhere....which means flooding of low lying areas.
