What a fantastic weekend Farside and I had. We skived off work early on Friday and headed off to the Kruger National Park. 20 000 km sq or unspoilt, untouched African bushveld. We saw 4 1/2 of the "Big Five". Buffalo, lion, rhino, elephant, and the 1/2 is a cheetah which is not part of the big 5 but a fantastic sighting. The only thing we didn't see of the Big 5 was leopard! We saw hyena too. The best thing was none of the sighting were in the distance - these were all within 1 to 15 meters away!! We saw 2 huge male lion feasting on a fresh buffalo kill not more than 3 metres off the side of the road. Yuch - the stench of the kill and noise of the lions cracking the bones and ripping the flesh and hide - gruesome stuff! The cheetah was a young one, about 2 years old and he just walked out in front of us and posed on a rock - what an incredibly magnificent animal! At another spot, we were sitting at a watering hole quite far off one of the tarred roads and I decided to test the 4x4 abilities of the car and went right down to the waters edge so Farside could get some good shots of the wading birds. I glanced to my right and within metres, a beautiful young lioness (not the one that posts here) strolled out of the underbrush into the sunlight - awesome!! I could write a book on this weekend but I'll let the photos do the talking!

Farside has some magnificent photo's and I have some good ones - now I have to learn how to paste them here. DAVE HELP! Or I'm going to e-mail them to you and you can post them please.

Go to the gallery page and set up your own gallery under members gallery's.
Then you can put photos straight from your pc to your gallery and then just direct link them from there to your post.
Tis not that hard, try it and see.

OK I want to see these photo's. Wow, i can't even imagine seeing a Lion let alone a couple feeding like that. Yep, i have seen them in London zoo but not the same as seeing them in their own environment. Fantastic weekend mate. good job I wasn't there I would of been stunned I was witnessing that. it's funny I was just talking to somebody last night how I take things forgranted in what i see until I speak to people from back in England and realize blimey that is pretty cool. Like seeing the Space Shuttle go up. They had their last night launch last week and it was amazing because it was so clear. At night ya can see the boosters drop off as well. I see John Glenn go as well. Plus gators, vulchers, red headed cranes...things ya don't see living in London. Then there was the things while living in London that people don't see....like the vast history for a start. If your a History buff, boy O boy take a trip to Britian. I say Britian because the whole country is just full of history. But again i took it forgranted until I moved to the U.S and realized that I lived in a city where ya could be looking at a building built in the fifteen hundreds.

Ride safe guys.....i want to see photo's.

I'm working on the photo's - this uploading, downloading stuff is new to me and I'm not very good at the techno stuff.

We do take so much for granted. For instance, the Kruger National Park is the same size as all of Wales with a little to spare and it's tucked away in a tiny corner of South Africa. It's about a 4 hour drive from Johannesburg and how often do we go there?? About once in 2 years. That's taking it for granted! I agree that if you want history, Europe and the UK are right up there without a doubt. To sit in a church that was built in the 900's and withstood war after war after, that's amazing.

If you ever make to this side of the pond, we promise we'd show you a good time. Can't guarantee that the animals will be co-operative, but we'll do our best.

Gromit, I am :y154: !!! That is my idea of a getaway. I love the outdoors and I am in my element there. What a fantastic weekend!!! I am so looking forward to the pics.

Worked like a charm. I love the bats; cool shot. And the tortoise looks just like our tortoises here in Florida. The lion pics are awesome; I'm jealous. And that water hole shot is great. Nice pic of the three giraffes and a very nice shot of that leopard. He/she looks like he was posing for you. I am assuming the raptor in the last photos is an eagle? Thanks for the pics! :y115:

Gromit, those photos are awesome! I would love to vist there. I could live there; I am a wilderness person. The picture of the cheetah is fantastic. What a beautiful animal.

Thanks MaeLynn. I must admit that the cheetah is my favourite of all the cats. The lion is awesome and the leopard is magnificent, but the cheetah...............just beats the spots off the lot of them. The combination of it's beauty, strength and speed is unbelievable and once you've seen this creature in action, you really understand survival of the fittest. In the chase, they expend so much energy running at 60 km's per hour, they can't actually kill their prey in the same fashion as a lion. Cheetah put their mouth over the mouth and nose of the prey and suffocate it - they just don't have the energy to rip it apart like the lion and leopard. These are also solo hunters unlike lion that hunt in prides. And anytime you want to come and do the wilderness thing, just let us know. :y115:

I would like to come yesterday! Maybe we will be able to make it in a year or so. Carl losing his job has changed a lot of plans.

I just looked at the photos you added. Those zebras are so cool. Nice pic of the cheetah on the move. Waht kind of bird is that 13th though 15th pictures? Wow, I do wish I could have been there.
