My idea of utopia would be to have a spot of land in the middle of nowhere, away from civilisation. I would grow my own veggies, have a cow for dairy, a chicken for eggs, broadband, satalite TV, my bike and hubby. I would live off the land. I wouldn't like a government or anybody telling me what to do. I could run around naked, worship the trees, practice voodoo, do what the hell I like because it would be on my land without interference from anybody else in the world. (The voodoo was just an example). Just sounds great.

Then I woke up and my coffee was cold.

All good and well, just so long as you don't have anything that the "World's Policeman" wants :silent:

And on my plot of land a lot illegal stuff will be unbanned.

But I have all that in my back yard already

I knew there was a reason I liked PE :y115:

Funny you should talk about a place like this. I have a mate that stayed in the Wilderness on the heights. The whole community did not really work but made crafts and stuff. Each one of them had a certain specialty they would grow or farm on there little plots of ground. They would all trade each other these produce and lived a very happy and sustainable life. None of them we well off but the made it from day to day. Seemed like it was the life to lead.  I loved spending my holidays here

For those of you across the pond

Sounds like a fine life. You don't need material posessions to be happy. Just live with nature and be a part of the land.

Right next to Wilderness is Mossel Bay. Now you know why Littleloon, B&D, Farside & I spend as much time down there as possible. When I'm in Mossel Bay, if feel like I can actually breathe! Little patch of paradise. :y115:

[/quoteYou should try Sodwana Bay, stuuuuuning, and you can even get there on a bike now, the road is tared all the way (and the beer is cheep ]

I love riding along this coast line from PE to Mossel Bay, I was quite disappointed that the Buffalo Rally was not around there this year. Just to give you an idea it took us 9 hours to ride from PE to Mossel Bay. For those that don’t know this is normally around a 4 hour trip. :silent: :y23:

There's a bunch of hippy tipes who live up in Graskop :y30:(similar to the crowd who live down in Knysna), the only time they wear anything besides sarongs is when it's too cold to pee, strange lot that. They make all kinds of beady stuff and wooden furniture and stuff - smelly bunch .(Lioness must have a lot of time to sit and think up these kinds of things :silent:)

Haven't been to Sodies in years. Not since I was doing my Naui course. It's too hot and humid for me now even though I'm a born & bred KZNer. Was considering a place in Zinkwazi a couple of years ago then Littleloon & BnD convinced us to go to Mossel Bay instead. The rest is history. Have a nice little getaway place on the beach in Mossel and wouldn't trade it for anything. Maybe Farside will post a pic of the view! I'm planning to get down there for a few days later this month. We'll see how the work thing goes.

Lioness, I concur. that is exactly what I want! :y115:

Well, we can't escape property taxes where we are, but we live on private property (47 years now) with 10 other families (8 related). It's about 110 acres of mesquite trees, buffalo grass and cactus scrub, with some old cow trails from when my family had a few head of cattle and I used to beat the trails on my dirt bikes. Sally & I have about 3/4 acre here, we live in a modular home of about 1,600 s.f., and I have a 5-bay garage/shop with a couple of storage rooms and a small office. We have a private drive a little over 1/4 mile long, with a couple of left-right-left curves that winds downhill to a pond, then around it, then over a spillway and uphill another 1/4 mile up to the back gate; it's the perfect little run to test out rebuilt bikes, carb tuning and brake checks. We've got deer, racoons, javalina (like wild hogs), foxes, bobcats and other critters, and several varieties of fish & turtles in the pond. Ours is one of a handful of larger ponds (7 acres) that are the local home to MANY waterfowl and birds that are somewhat unique to south Texas.

That's the good part.

The bad part is that the city has surrounded us. Airport traffic (we are right under the approach) has increased with heavy commercial traffic, a new neighborhood took over about 100 acres that were formerly our south pasture, and it is all smaller government-assisted homes and already is starting to look like a slum with about 6 cars for every small house, 4 of which are non-functioning, loud "music" till 2 or 3 in the morning very often (all we hear is the thumping Bass beat). Then there are the neighbors (non-family) who have dogs that bark and chase us when we ride our bicycles and have nipped several family members (I was was finally able to run over one of the worst offenders with my truck when he chased too close). To top it off, recently my sister's house was broken into in the morning WHILE THEY WERE ASLEEP IN THE HOUSE, they took her purse and car keys, and stole her new SUV.

You might find Utopia, but soon enough it will be just another place where the world wants what you have and doesn't care if it's not thiers, and they have no consideration for anyone around them when they move in next door.
