Go you have a grunge brush? That eliminated the need to spray the kerosene.
I usually tske the chain guard off. It makes the cleaning easier and faster.
I do. Still seemed like it was necessary to spray. The chain seemed pretty dirty and there was crud and junk everywhere, dirt, rocks to nuts. How do I know the chain is clean enough, when a cloth no longer comes off black?
Yes, but for practical purposes, it doesn't have to be that clean unless you are showing the bike.
Ok, good. I’ll just make sure the gritty bits are all out of the miscellaneous crevices and the cloth looks a bit clean. LoL.
I agree, just get the worst off. When the cloth is fairly clean, be happy with that. You don't need to get it showroom clean.

Well the cleaning part is done, final pass rag, front and rear areas clean.
Looks really good. I very rarely clean mine that thoroughly. I just get the grunge off, lube it and ride!

To me, liberally means only a few drips. Over saturated mean lots of drips and running off. Don't over think this, It is not rocket science nor is it life or death.

This is an argument that has been raging for a long time. I have no scientific background, so I rely on other more experienced peoples opinions. By far the most common opinion is the same as expressed in this article. I realise this article is arguing it won’t damage the o rings in a chain, as opposed to getting past them and dissolving the grease, but as it says chain manufacturers generally recommend using kero to clean a o ring chain. I have always used kero and a SOFT paint brush to clean my chains (I have heard that stiff bristled brushes can damage the o rings) my current chain has 34,000km on it and is still OK, though I plan to have it changed at the 36,000km service.
I’m going to use kerosene as my basic. I did use both the grunge brushes, and a old toothbrush, and a whole bunch of paper towels.
