Enter Gasoline Motor Co. of Sydney, Australia, who have been building and servicing bikes since 1993. They partnered with Sailor Jerry Australia to build a Bonneville that gave the rider the freedom to go anywhere he wished, on a wider variety of terrain. The result is the “Sailor Scrambler” — with a chunky front end, exquisite exhaust, and vintage-inspired tank paint.

“Sailor Scrambler”: Builder Interview

• Please tell us a bit about yourself, your history with motorcycles, and your workshop.
Gasoline Motor Co. has been operating in Sydney since 1993 focusing on building, servicing and selling motorcycles of all makes and models. We have built custom motorcycles for clients locally and internationally with our creations exhibited at shows and featured on blogs and in magazines all over the world.

• What’s the make, model, and year of the bike?
Triumph, Bonneville, 2008

• Why was this bike built?
The Sailor Jerry Scrambler build was a collaboration between Sailor Jerry Australia and Gasoline Motor Co. Built to reflect the adventurous spirit of the Sailor Jerry brand. Gasoline wanted this custom Bonneville to be able to go anywhere and do anything, giving the rider a real sense of freedom.

• What was the design concept and what influenced the build?
Gasoline wanted to transform the classic British-made Bonneville from something that was comfortable on the road into something that could tackle any terrain and go wherever the rider wished. They wanted to keep the stylish personality of the Bonneville, but expand its capabilities so that it could go beyond the asphalt and concrete and blaze its own trails, wherever that may be.

• What custom work was done to the bike?
- New subframe fabricated with swaged rear hoop to accommodate LED Tail light and integrated indicators.
- Fat and chunky front end
- Custom designed and engineered CNC cut triple clamps
- Hand laced wheels
- Off road knobby tyres
- Scrambler height rear shocks to raise clearance
- Super low profile seat base
- Custom leather seat with logo embossing
- Streamlined electrics with hidden battery compartment under seat
- Stainless steel custom fabricated twin exhaust with flared shotgun enders
- Hand painted tank to match Premier Helmet design by Roger @ Retroline (forest shoot)
- Second hand painted tank by Rhys Gordon commissioned by Sailor Jerry (studio shoot)
The build is a modern scrambler, taking a classic Bonneville and making it more suitable to rougher terrain.

• Was there anything done during this build that you are particularly proud of?
This build has a lot of standout features – like the custom rear subframe with embossed leather seat, the massive front end with off road tyres and custom CNC’d triple clamps, the hand painted tank(s) but the main aspect that really sets it apart is the custom fabricated twin exhaust system. Made specifically to wrap tightly around the engine casing it’s finished off with a pair of flared shotgun enders giving the 900c engine an awesome aggressive roar.
