Famous last words - friends of mine's little boy was mauled by a lion at a lion rehab centre when he was 6 - he and my son were in Gr 1 at the time. Granted, the lion was not behind safety glass but behind special 'game' fencing. When lion see small kids up close, it's instinct that they know the 'object' is smaller and therefore a quick, easy snack.

Not a chance I'd let my kid my get that close to a lion even in a zoo behind safety glass - even safety glass has been known to fail. I have huge respect for the big cats.

I just watched a very disturbing video well part of it anyway where a lion attacks his trainer and starts eating him they eventual shot the lion 6 times before he let go. I stopped here as I just could not watch the lion in that condition. Funny I felt more for the lion as he did not ask to be there where the trainer did it knowingly

I'm with you Dave - only place we should see lion (and most other animals) is in their natural habitat. And before I get a lecture, yes I do understand the need for conservation and breeding projects. Still, seeing a pride of lion in the wild, nothing can compare.
Thanks Dave - now I want to run off to the bush for weekend but no such luck. So I'll just go look at some of my photos and dream on...................

Weather is stunning today and leave our GOLD mine-dumps alone - they keep the country running :y2: Actually, most of the mine dumps around Jhb are disappearing - they're recycling them and extracting all kinds of metals and minerals. One of the Jozi landmark minedumps on the South side has disappeared altogether - really weird driving past there now.

I remember I used to go to the Top Star Drive-in, I see it is now gone
Top Star dump going fast

Farside's factory was right behind the old drive-in. When they started excavating the mine-dump, huge sink-holes started appearing and roads to the industrial park just collapsed and disappeared. But he'd moved the factory just before the excavations started. And would you believe some bunch of nutters tried to have the excavation legally stopped as they claimed the mine-dump was a 'landmark' in Jhb and should be preserved. I can guarantee they didn't live or work anywhere the site; if they did, they'd have welcomed the removal because the dust from the mine-dump was intolerable, especially in the winter months. I'm glad to see it gone but it still looks weird.
