I want to remove rust and line my motorcycle tank. Any recommendations? If I spill any of the chemicals on the tank will it ruin my paint job?

I've used Kreem gas tank cleaner then sealer (2 part process) in the oldies I've restored with some decent success. Most of of 'em will tell you it will harm the paint if spilled on the surface. I use painters tape (the blue stuff) (NOT masking tape) and sealed the painted surface as much as I can. Good luck!!

How rusty is the tank? I used the electrolysis process on a 1984 XJ750X (Yamaha Maxim-X) tank that had quite a bit of rust in it. It came out shiny clean. Here is the instructable for it.

I dried it out with a hair dryer on the hot setting then used POR15 motorcycle tank repair kit To seal it back up. I kept the bike another 5 years and the tank was still better than new when I traded it for a KLR 650.

I will strip paint if I remember correctly though so you have to be careful with it.

EVERYTHING ruins the paint job! I sealed my Bonnie tank in 1987 and it is holding up well. The stuff available back then must have been pretty good stuff. Probably eat yer fingers off . . .

Hi Rick,

Have done a number of Triumph and Norton Commando tanks and the only product I recommend is POR 15. Stay away from KREM, as it is sadly garbage. The biggest factor you will have to deal with is patience and if you are carefull, your paint will be fine.
