Hello, I'm restoring a 1968 Trophy 500 and I'm in need of a gas tank. All I can find on the internet are from India. Does anyone have a new one for sale or a inside track to where I can find one?

Thanks in advance. Mark

Apart from India, last 68 500 tanks Triumph made were in 68, 54 years ago; if anyone owns a new Triumph made tank and wants to sell, how much are you expecting to pay?

If it must be Triumph made, 67 and 68 T100R and T100C tanks are exactly the same, just painted differently; 69-72, the only difference is the front mounting threads are 5/16"-24 (UNF) instead of 67/68 5/16"-26 (British Standard Cycle aka "CEI"); 73/74, the only differences from 67/68 are the UNF threads and there is no top seam.

The Indians have been making tanks for a long time, they are good, many posts on old bike forums from satisfied recipients. You can end up paying a lot more for a rusty Triumph made tank, then have to pay more to make it usable.

Hey Rudie,

Thanks for the great info. I don't need a Triumph made tank, I just need to know what tanks will fit. The info you posted will be a tremendous help. I've build bikes before, the Triumph is all new to me. Thanks again.

Mark

Hey Rudie,

Can you define the difference between T120 and T140?

difference between T120 and T140?
T140 is the twin carb version of the two valves per cylinder 750 parallel twin, made from 73 to 83. All standard T140 have the frame that carries the oil in a large diameter tube over and behind the engine.

T120 is the twin carb version of the 650 parallel twin, made from 59 to 74. 59-62 are known as "pre unit" - the crankcase and gearbox are in separate castings, connected by the (separate) primary chaincase casting. 67-74 are "unit" - crankcase, gearbox and primary are just separate compartments within the crankcase castings pair.

59-62 pre-unit T120 could have one of two different frames with a separate oil tank, 63-70 T120 have a third different frame with a separate oil tank, 71-74 T120 have the same OIF (Oil In Frame) as the T140.

In the context of your earlier question about the T100C tank, while the 67 on "C range" (unit 350 and 500 twin engines) share many parts with the 63-70 unit 650, not the fuel tanks :( - the C range front frame loop is shorter front to back than the unit 650, the tanks bolt to the frame loops.
