I had a 0615 shift in the Control Tower at San Diego Linbergh, it was very weird when a message saying "National Airspace System Closed" came across our system.
We had many diverts from LAX and were very busy, then nada.

That must have been totally different. When you got the system message were you already aware of the catastrophe?

Yes, I was at home getting ready for a 0615 (PDT) shift when the first plane hit. The second hit just before I left for work. When I got there we still had 15-20 to get on the ground. When the last aircraft was down they shut the NAS. The only aircraft flying were military, there were a few F18's orbiting San Diego.

The Air Show itself was pretty good.

But they had to stop it twice during the day because Air Force One landed in Pittsburgh. All air traffic was prohibited for a 30 mile radius until Marine One took off for Shanksville. The it resumes only to be interrupted again when Obamo returned in Marine One until Air Force One took off again. They had three identical Air Force Ones land and three Marine Ones so that if you did try to take one down, you wouldn't know which one Obama was in.

Security was unbelievably tight with absolutely no one getting on airport property without getting a full pat down and guys in black uniforms (??) carrying M-16s everywhere. And this was on an active Air Force Reserve base!

They made everyone park in lots off base about 2 miles away and then we were shuttled by bus onto the base where the searches took place.

Paul Simon (of Simon and Garfunkel fame) played "Sounds of Silence" at the 9/11 Ground Zero Memorial Anniversary Ceremony today in New York City. Such a perfect song for the occasion......

Wow AJ it was a shock seeing Paul Simon in this video he looks so lost and empty. I did watch a the program on National Geographic last night and I think it was the same one you mentioned in this thread earlier

I believe Paul Simon was fighting back tears throughout the song.

If the program you watched was all George Bush talking about September 11 in his own words, then that was the same show. Quite good wasn't it?
