In Florida, the insurance companies notify the state when one purchases insurance and when one cancels or the company cancels insurance. This makes it easy to renew online.

That is one aspect of Pennsylvania's rules that I never could understand.

Here in PA., the Insurance Company is required to inform them when you drop your insurance for any reason at all.

They are NOT required to tell them when you open a new policy.

So...if you change Insurance Companies just due to getting a better rate for example, the company that you dropped informs the State who, in turn, sends you a letter saying they want your license plate returned due to lack of insurance. Then it's up to you to go through the motions of proving you have a new policy.

To make matters worse, sometimes I get letters saying they want my horse trailer license plate returned due to lack of insurance. But there is no requirement to insure a horse trailer. So I have to again go through the motions of contacting the DMV and getting them to sign-off on a fact that they already know!

What is crazy is that I actually DO have my horse trailer insured but since there's no requirement to do that, there is no record sent the the State.

As far as I know the only requirement re proof of insurance in NS is when you apply to renew your plates each year - now two years here.
Motorcycles are still every year.
I'm certain there is no procedure to advise DMV re insurance dropped, cancelled or changed.
As Carl mentioned, it's different in each US state. Same thing here in our ten provinces and territories - different but quite similar.
Some provinces still require two plates. NS requires only one on the back.
You can put any plate on the front you wish. I have seen NS cars with a front plate from US states (?) and even other countries (???)
One of my neighbours has a plate from Texas on the front of his Volvo (?)
Many have novelty plates too - "I'd rather be riding my Triumph motorcycle", etc., etc.

Yes, only one plate is required in the rear in Pennsylvania too. And many people have novelty plates on the front. I used to have a Quebec plate on the front of my Jeep! As you can see below, my MINI Cooper has a British number plate on the front:

In Texas the insurance company reporting you have insurance would not meet the letter of the law. We are not required to have insurance, we are required to prove financial responsibility. Most use insurance for the purpose but my company is self insured... ie proves financial responsibility without having to pay an insurance premium. Any individual or business can opt out of insurance as long as they have the money on hand to cover the state minimums. Here cops are not supposed to ask for your registration or proof of insurance. Requesting proof of insurance can be grounds for having a ticket thrown out of court.

Well, it's basically the same here in PA. They don't really call the card we have to produce to the cops a 'proof of insurance', but a 'proof of financial responsibility'. If you are wealthy enough, you can forgo buying insurance, but you have to have a card that shows that. You must have that document along with the driver's license and vehicle registration if you are stopped.
