Traffic cops patrol in full force
Johannesburg - If you think you can escape the road blocks planned for most of the country’s major roads this festive season, think again.
Members of the newly-established national traffic police intervention unit (NIU) have joined other traffic law enforcement units across the nine provinces from this weekend.
The 231-member unit which falls under the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has jurisdiction across the country, unlike provincial traffic and municipal police departments limited by municipal and provincial borders.

No Mercy for Drunk Driving - Ndebele
Last month alone, a total of 1 320 drunk drivers were arrested throughout the country. From 1 October 2010 to 31 May 2011, 15 197 drunk drivers were arrested.
DNA tests to ID Belfast crash victims
DNA test results are expected to be released on Monday to help identify victims of a horror crash that claimed 18 lives in Belfast, Mpumalanga.

South Africans consume over 6 billion litres of alcohol per year, which makes us one of the highest alcohol consuming nations in the world
50,5% percent of people who died non-natural deaths in the Cape metropole in 1995, had blood alcohol levels above .1gm/100ml
Alcohol misuse costs South Africa approximately R9,5 billion per year – 2% of the Gross National Product
South Africa is estimated to have 240 000 shebeens
More than 60% of hospital trauma cases are linked to alcoholic consumption
26% percent of women in the Western Cape consume enough alcohol to put their babies at risk for foetal alcohol syndrome.
Drunk Driving and Road Safety
Drunk Driving is one of the biggest threats to Road Safety in South Africa. Research indicates that 50% of people who die on the roads have a blood alcohol concentration above 0.05 gram per 100 millilitres.
So if I have to sit in a few road blocks to get some of the above from happening it was worth it for me
