Hello.

This has been going on for most of this year, as many of you will know about from my previous posts.

Still having the same problems no resolution.

What is a new development is, when I put the bike in to 4th gear there is a ratchetting sound, not sure if it's from the clutch or the gear box, knock it back down out of 4th sound goes away.

I am at a complete loss at what to do next, I have put in new friction plates, new pressure plate springs, new clutch cable, new conical spring on the clutch mechanism on the gear shift side.

Nothing I do is fixing the issues, clutch drag, clutch slipping, loss of power on acceleration & now the ratchetting sound.

I am at my wits end, I can't ride the bike further than a quick ride going around the block to check my latest attempts to check the clutch operation.

Anyone got any suggestion's please, I am desperate.

TIA,

Andy.

Not having read you previous posts this latest phenomenon sounds very much like you are going to have to strip the gearbox.

Apologies for failing to reply earlier.

If you do not have a mechanic's stethoscope, long screwdriver, hold the end of the handle to one ear, the other end of the driver at various places on the engine; this will reduce the area of the engine with the noise source, particularly between, say, the primary chaincase and the gearbox.

When a gearbox is in top gear - 4th on your bike - the gearbox mainshaft and layshaft are being driven by the respective "High gears" (64 C range parts book, pages 26 and 27, parts 9 and 15). The layshaft high gear is either part of the shaft or an interference fit on the shaft (i.e. it does not move normally) so, when the gearbox is in other gears, the mainshaft high gear simply rotates freely around its shaft, it is only locked to the shaft when the gearbox is in top gear. "ratchetting sound" in top gear, fwiw, my initial suspicion would be the mainshaft high gear is not being locked to the shaft, due to wear in the Gear selector camplate (part 25) and/or the Mainshaft selector fork (part 23)? :(

Regrettably, you will need to remove the clutch and final drive sprocket to free the mainshaft to extract the gear cluster from the crankcase. :( However, those done, if you wish to take the gearbox to a specialist for diagnosis and any repair, all shafts, gears, selectors, etc can remain assembled on the Inner cover (part 30). (y)

Otoh, if you wish to dismantle and inspect the gearbox components, parts are unlikely to be available by the 64 part numbers; late Daytona parts (1974 Daytona parts book) might fit but you should always check closely; if gears are replaced, it is advisable to replace both mainshaft and layshaft gears together.

Whether you or a specialist works on the gearbox, I advise replacing all bearings; the High gear bearing (part 1) and the Layshaft bearing (part 7) are in the crankcase.
