64 3ta Pistons +40

Hi,

my engine needs a rebore & a new set of pistons. I'm having real trouble finding a replacement pair, the only part code I can find is CP164, does anyone know of any other part numbers please?

A new set in the UK are over £200, there are plenty available for 5ta's at around £90 a pair, huge difference in price.

Atlernativley, does anyone hae a pair of pistons they want to sell?

Just using Google to search for CP164 returns three sources in the UK, only one (Tri-Cor England) exceeds £200 including VAT. The cheapest is Hawkshaw (who also list the other part numbers above) @ £160 including VAT; however, before you get your hopes up, 'phone them to check because their listed prices for slow-moving parts aren't always up-to-date.

Using Google with 70-6908 returns links to potential US sources.

Hawkshaw list standard and +10 3TA pistons for just over £100/pair inc. VAT. 3TA's were ripe for conversion to Tiger 90's or 500's when they (3TA's) were least desirable and engine parts were cheap, now 3TA-peculiar parts are slow-moving.

thanks for the help so far.

I have had a chance to look a bit more into finding new pistons.

I have found a supplier call Redlizard Motorcycles, who, still expensive at £150 a pair have a set. Unfortunately the info on their site is somewhat confusing, saying that 7.5:1 ratio pistons are for 57 - 62 3ta's, code 19532.

I have rechecked my parts catalogue & it definitely states 7.5:1 are used on my 64.

I have contact them & they are saying my bike uses 9:1 ratio pistons, these are more expensive again.

Are the 7.5:1 correct for my bike please? I have used all the codes in my searches, 70-6908, CP164 & 19532, all come back with 7.5:1 pistons.

Otoh, Hawkshaw, Tri-Supply, Feked and Tri-Cor England (linked by searching with "triumph cp164") or Baxter and Klempf (linked by searching with "triumph 70-6908") have all been Meriden Triumph specialists for at least reasonable lengths of time - Randy Baxter and Mitch Klempf were US dealers when Meriden made thirty-odd thousand bikes a year, Hawkshaw has links to old-time Liverpool dealer Ben Lloyd from the same period.

9:1 350 pistons were used in the Tiger 90, they were one of the engine differences between 3TA and Tiger 90 that resulted in a 50% increase in peak power (3TA 18 bhp, Tiger 90 27 bhp) and one of the previously-mentioned "conversions" when bikes and parts were cheap in the seventies and eighties because few people cared about them
