NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania state troopers are trying to identify a group of young Amish men who they say indecently assaulted three girls recently in Wilmington Township, Lawrence County.

"The state police respond to any incident. It's a crime. We don't take into consideration anyone's race, creed or religion. We deal with the incident at hand, and that's the way this is going to be handled," Trooper Matthew Roth said on Wednesday.

The incident happened Sept. 2 at a horse auction that the children attended with their parents on Route 208, according to police at the New Castle station."I believe the parents were inside conducting business at the livestock area, and the girls were in more of a playground area outside," Roth said.

Five men groped and fondled the girls, two of whom are 13 and the other age 12, according to a police report."It's believed that the individuals who did the assault were intoxicated and did pull one of the young girls down a set of stairs and punched her in the arm or something," Roth said.

Police said several witnesses have backed up the girls' account of the incident.

An Amish-related investigation "has its technology challenges," Roth said. "We can't just get on the phone and contact these folks. But they do cooperate as victims. They do cooperate when they are accused."

Although no arrests have been made, police said they have some leads on the identities of the men, whom they believe range in age from 18 to 25 and are from the New Wilmington area.

I know little about the Amish, but I know something about criminal behavior. Is it possible that thee were not Amish men, but others dressed to appear Amish so as to blend into a group of real Amish? If these men were Amish - their behavior runs contrary to everything I've ever heard about the Amish and their culture. Of course, there are aberrant members of every group.

This strikes me as a bit odd really, why do people expect it to be dealt with in a different way because of being of a different race, creed or religion.

Edit - Dumb question I suppose they do in our PC world :y22:

Is the Amish lifestyle 'normal'? Is it possible that when people are insulated and isolated from open society from cradle to grave, when these people are 'let loose' in open society, their natural teenage instincts take over and they do what millions of teenagers do - drink for the thrill of something illicit or prohibited and not being used to drink or having normal contact with the opposite sex, the drink undoes the inhibitions and these boys acted out in defiance of their strictly regimented and insulated lifestyle?

I'm not defending anyone who molests or attacks children, not at all - just wondering whether this lifestyle is normal???? And does it have it's consequences when these kids go out into the worldly arena???

They obviously have an insulted society which is absolutely normal for them. It is really no difference than any child raised in a stricter home by parents who really love them and care. When such kids get out into the real world, they are bound to try the things prohibited at home.

Until you are an adult in Amish society, you are not yet a member of the sect. At adulthood, you make the choice to formally join the sect or not. Until that time, you are expected to "sow your wild oats", so to speak. Drinking and even using drugs isn't all that uncommon.

If you choose not to join the sect, you are shunned (no Amish, not even your Parents will speak to you and you have to leave).

By the way....if the girls had been Amish girls, the police never would have been involved. They would have taken care of this internally within the Amish community.

I also doubt it was anyone posing as Amish since all the Amish know each other and they would have been immediately exposed.

Ok then its normal adult age I thought they may see a child as an adult at 16 or something like that. Just one other thing you mentioned if it were an Amish girl they would have dealt with it internally. What sort of way do they do this after all it is a crime according to the country laws

Remember, they only go to school up to the 8th grade, so settling down and getting married earlier than what we do isn't that strange. They live in a bygone era in many ways and marrying young used to be pretty normal in the old days...especially in rural and farm areas.

Yes that is also true a bit rough in today's times and I am wondering how does the law come into it all. Not sure you side but does the law allow such young marriages, I suppose it must seeing they are doing it.

I lived in a backwater town for a short time when I was a kid. I remember hearing the local doctor say he was the one to tell the clergyman when a marriage was going to happen.:y15:
