This is my favourite Haka. I get chills everytime I watch it - the passion is incredible.

Sorry, I don't know how to post an clicky thing so you have to wait for youtube to open.

Oh and don't confuse my admiration for support for the All Blacks - I'm a "Bokkie" through and through :y2:

Those are grown men?

Exactly what is that accomplishing?

Sorry...I just don't "get it".....

From what I understand of the Haka it was the war cry of ancient or native New Zealand warriors used to psych out their opponents. Or at least that was what they said on The Ultimate Warrior program which pitted New Zealand warriors against Ninjas.

I suppose it very much like going to a fight and a hockey game breaks out :y2:

That would be about correct Haka From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hockey, baseball, American football, or basketball teams don't do war dances before they square off and play a game????

I actually think it would be against the rules in sports that I know of.

So don't the look kind of foolish (being all macho like that) and then end up losing a match?

In the movie ZULU after the ZULUs did this the English garrison started singing, do they do this at rugby games? Its a lot better when they have swords to slap against shields for a bit of percussion.

All that said - I like it, bad sportsmanship before the game even starts! Take that Hockey fans!

I want to see this adopted by the PGA. Can't wait to see what Tiger Woods coreographer comes up with; Roy McIlroy needs to do his in a kilt with pipes and drums behind him.

We just had a wonderful pipe and drum corp at our church's annual picnic (presbyterians of course); I have to admit that if I was a 18th century warrior and and a column of opposing soldiers was coming toward me being led by a couple of dozen pipes, a dozen or so tight snares popping and the thunder of big bass drums, I would need a big snort of whiskey to keep from running away.

Intimidation works!

Perhaps being from Pittsburgh where we would never think of even having cheerleaders at a Steeler game (having cheerleaders is too gay), this seems kind of goofy.

I was always under the impression that New Zealanders spoke English??? What language is that supposed to be?

:y2: It's a rugby thing and without it well lets just say it would not be the same. We also like to dress up and look silly as well

Now when it comes to sport we feel that fighting is just poor sportsmanship but yet it is encouraged in hockey and you even have an enforcer and they also have funny names :y10:

Then we also don't believe we should use young girls in sport using them as cheerleaders ( must admit I do however like it :y2: )

Then we have these guys doing a little jig each time they score :y13:

And this one is very strange here we have grown men in animal outfits fighting :y13:

Then of course in soccer they just like sharing the love

The Australians just got confused and could not decide if they should play soccer or rugby so they made it up and called it footy (must admit I like this sport)

So there you go any sport can be viewed as being a bit strange by others sitting outside of those traditions BGRIN

The New Zealand "All Blacks" rugby team has done the Haka before matches for many, many years. Yes, it is a Maori traditional 'challenge' against the opposition, not so much a declaration of war. The Maori's are the natural indigenous inhabitants of the 2 islands of New Zealand and their nation has endured over the centuries.

The Haka is steeped in traditional history of the Maori nation - my personal opinion of the haka being performed before a rugby match is as much a recognition of the intricate and esoteric tradition of the Maori nation as it is an intimidation tool. I understand that there is more than 1 haka - some call upon the 'gods' to help them through whatever challenge they are facing and some are more agressive and a full challenge to the enemy to 'bring it on'.

The tatoos that many of the All Blacks have are also ancient Maori tatoos.

The logo of the All Blacks teams is often mistaken as a fern leaf but it is actually a feather.

The Zulu's are a different story - no, we don't have Zulu's come out and do a war dance before any Springbok game. We did it once against the All Blacks and were rapped over the knuckles as trying to deliberately intimidate the opposition.

The Zulu's don't/didn't make a big noise or song and dance in the face of the enemy before a battle. Quite the opposite really. But that's another story. The Zulu warriors would perform their war dances BEFORE they faced the enemy and went on the march across the plains and mountains of the Natal midlands and further. It is very emotional and stirring to watch a proper, traditional, live Zulu war dance - the drums reverberate in your chest.....OK, enough or this will be a book.
